Is there a way an Appraiser can check to see if the FHA case # on an appraisal request is legitimate? The last time I called FHA with a question, the lady was pretty much rude and abrupt.

I received an appraisal request from a lender today. Under "Case Number Assignment Results" it says "ERROR"

In the " As Required" area of the FHA Connection form, it says "Prev Case No: 492-xxxxxxx, which appears to be a legitimate case number. ( x's are to protect the innocent. :) )

Under "Details" it says - " Held for duplicate Address; Wait one business day then check holds tracking.

I haven't seen this before. The Mortgage company's fax cover sheet says that they "received a 'hold' on the case #, nothing unusual. Will provide case number tomorrow".

Tomorrow is when I will get more serious about this appraisal.....when I see a legitamate case number.

What say you?

Well, guess it was a legitimate issue, as I received the FHA case # today. It was the same as the one on the "error" request.

But, I still wish there was an "on-line" source to verify FHA case #'s.

Oh well, just happy to have work, especially through the holidays!

Here's wishing everyone a happy new year, and a profitable one also!

I don't remember where right now, but in the past I logged in to the HUD site and could see current case numbers assigned to me. I could only see them if they were assigned to me.

CP, if you ever remember that link, let us know, that would be excellent, we could double check it every so often to make sure no one is using our identity...

Bogus #'s

Well, that would be good information to have. I am also wondering if anyone ever got an appraisal with a bogus FHA #? I don't see the advantage to someone trying that......but some of the things they try make me wonder. :)

I figure that there has to be a record somewhere, I just wondered if it was available to Appraisers.

Maybe I will just have to call the FHA "hotline".

It was somewhere in the FHA Connection area. Maybe it was the license look-up, or Single Family Origination area. I really don't remember right now, and haven't done an FHA job in a few months.

Well, the most helpful folks at FHA answered my question:

No.
