Tried Dave Smith's way .. complete delete, defrag and reload ..

Didn't help. Also now find that MLS site doesn't work properly .. having to do with scripts .. (MLS only works on InterNut Explorer.)

Less than happy, at this point and, like Wayne, I'm a paying customer ..

To Wayne and all the rest; THANKS, for all your input and interesting comments. As for the paying customer stuff, sometimes it just pays to be cheap - you get the minimal, but it's usually hassle free. Bill hope all goes well and yourself back in order soon :)

Here is the latest I have been able to find on ZoneAlarm 3.0.Steve is a contributing editor to PC World. I have found his advice to be very helpful.

Subject: Initial Report on Zone Alarm 3.0

Don't upgrade to Zone Alarm 3.0 Pro just yet. The beta
period was too short and the product isn't stable enough to use. (If you've already upgraded, don't be overly concerned. It won't do any harm to your system.)

My experience? Numerous ZA crashes, system lockups, and
incompatibilities with other programs. I'm also unhappy with ZA's amazingly long two minute loading time.

It's inconceivable to me that a product that has such a major impact on a user's PC--and one we hang lots of trust on--is limited to a 30 day beta.

(The beta started on February 6 and ended on March 4.)

What's also bewildering is that the ad-blocking features (pop up ads, Java, ActiveX), the part of ZA I was hoping would exceed my expectations, are dreadfully inadequate compared to my current program, Ad-Subtract.

I imagine the ZA R&D people are working overtime and the
first incremental upgrade will be out the door shortly. Me? I'll wait until the second upgrade is ready.

To all ..

<span style='color:darkblue'>Wayne opines thusly:

"I am a paid Zone Alarm user also, I believe in paying for
software that works good, so I have the "pro" version.
Wish I didn't pay them, it seems like they took the money
from me and other users and put a bunch of stuff there that
is unneeded and unwanted."

Absolutely one of my biggest pet peeves with software. DeLorme's mapping software people should spend their time getting more roads identified and wrong ones removed. That may be a lot of unsexy leg work, but would be more appreciated (by far) than the forced bells and whistles that interfere. My version 6.0 forces you to remove certain unneeded features each and every time I fire it up. Speaking with them on the phone indicated that this was the only way to shut down the unwanted features each time (like the routing overlay, and a couple others).

They should have the "simple version" available and charge more for it!

Bill in NY mentioned some problems with installing ZoneAlarm. The last time I tried, nine months ago, to install it on this Toshiba laptop, I got to spend a weekend reformatting the hard drive after not being able to use the Internet fully for several months.

As I was down to my last "reload" for MLS, it knocked me out of that permanently. I rarely do residential work, but there are still times it would be nice to have the service.

I am hesitant to try again, but if I do, its bigtime CD burning time before I start.

I'm with you David.

Just sent a note to DeLorme this morning. Got suckered into buying Street Atlas USA Deluxe. Had road on the screen in front of me and the search could not find it. This has happened 5 or 6 times in the past month. That or it jumps me from Michigan to Washington or North Carolina to a similar city. They are trying to do too much in one program.

Wish I could find the install disk for my old Street Atlas 8.0. I'd put that back in the box and use it. Besides, it was similar and faster.

Richard (on the mitten of Michigan):

I have Street Atlas 6.0. Can you use it?

Across the lake on Wisconsin's thumb.

Correction:

Make that Street Atlas 5.0 by DeLorme and Streets98 6.0 by Microsoft.

With your Thumb and my Mitt, what a pair.

Thanks for the offer. Let me see what DeLorme has to say.

Plus, now that the office manager has given me a new fishing closet (she vacated the spice closet), I just might come across that install CD when all of that fishing tackle gets moved.

I appreciate the offer and will keep it in mind.
