I am considering relocating to Florida, ailing parents etc...
I am having difficulty finding info on the Florida Supplemental Exam. Is it similar to the Nation Exam we all know and love.
WHo proctors it?
Thanks for any info.

You are best off calling Talahassee.
The horse's mouth has fresher news than the other end.

always call the state 3 times, go with the answer you get twice. if they tell you something different each time call 2 more times.

The Supplemental Exam tests your knowledge of Florida rules and regulations with a few USPAP questions thrown in as filler. The exam is taken through Pearson Vue.

As a heads-up, FL has its own super-special requirements for education and testing and gets its feathers in a ruffle when out-of-state appraisers transfer here with out-of-state education. The approval process for those transferring from out-of-state can take at least 6 months (me with all AI coursework) to 15 months (a co-worker without AI coursework whose application package was "lost" a couple of times).

Good luck...

You will probably find this of interest. I'll tell you right now that Section VIII is BS. This "rule" was in effect when I applied. I still had to complete the entire application process right down to experience logs. I specifically asked why I had to jump through hoops when I was already "compliant". "Because" best describes the answer I received.

That is particularly good advice in Florida. The person answering the phone may or may not have any knowledge of appraisal licensing since Florida using the same phone number for most all businesses.

Your profile shows you as a Trainee. Coming to Florida as Trainee is even more difficult. We have location restrictions and supervisory restrictions. You WILL need your experience logs and your education will have to be approved and possibly audited for compliance with Florida's education requirements.

If you call the Department of Business and Professional Regulations in Orlando try as hard as you possibly can to get in touch with Ms Peacock. She can lead you in the right direction and knows more about the requirements than any one else in the Dept.

I never changed my status from Trainee to Certified Res............thanks for pointing that out to me. I was in class awhile back with a Florida appraiser and they said it was difficult to become licensed in Florida. I don't know why it would be different than anywhere else. Do we not all comply with the same education and training requirements now?

Thanks for the information.

I don't know why everybody else had problems. Five years ago, my application process took 2 weeks before I was permitted to take the Florida certification exam. I just assumed that if you were certified elsewhere and your application was complete, it would take a short time.

The FL exams are longer and have higher passing score requirements. I have taken a couple of AI courses here and out-of-state students take the same exam as the rest of the country while the FL students take an exam which is basically twice as long and has a 75% passing requirement compared to the standard 70% in the rest of the country.

Who did you know in the licensing section? :)

When I applied here two years ago, I called to check on the status about three weeks after application. I was told the licensing section was permitted 30 days after receipt to even look at the application. So about 6 weeks after application, I got a notice that they needed additional info. They, again, give themselves 30 days after receipt of the info to even look at it. Then they notice out- of-state coursework. So the package is sent to the Division of Real Estate for approval of the coursework. Thirty days later, it is approved and sent back to licensing. Thirty days later, they might get around to authorizing the applicant to take the exam. Then you need to schedule the exam. You pass the exam. The licensing section then takes their sweet-*** time issuing your license. And yes, I had to make a couple of calls to Ms. Peacock in an effort to speed things along since I had a job offer here and the start date was becoming dangerously close. Calling the licensing section is an exercise in futility, even if you manage to get a supervisor.

After I started working here, I upgraded to CG. The entire application process was redone. Right down to retaking fingerprints. I advised the licensing section that my fingerprints were already on file and they had not changed. No matter. I still had to get my fingerprints retaken. I had to resubmit my experience logs, including all the res experience they had already reviewed. My education, which had already been approved for the CR license, was resubmitted. Now the licensing section was giving itself 45 days to look at anything after receipt. Again, my education (which was already completely reviewed when I submitted my CR application and which included all the qualifying education for the CG at that time) was sent to Division of Real Estate for review since it was obtained out of state. Again, the licensing section gave itself 45 days to even look at the response from the Division of Real Estate.

The application approval process took six months to receive my CR license when I moved here. The application process to upgrade to my CG took six months when everything except some additional commercial experience had already been reviewed for the CR license.

Based upon my conversations with other appraisers here, my application approval experience was typical.
