Fannie Mae, which it is known by, and no longer going by FNMA some of us remember is a privately operated corporation in much the same way the U. S. Postal Service is. It operates similar to Freddie Mac and Farmer Mac. Fannie Mae is government insured, but not government owned. Its own statement is that is is an investor owned corporation CHARTERED by the U. S. Government.
