Ftp Servers?

Status
Not open for further replies.
Actually you don't need a static Ip address or register a domain name to set up a FTP server(Serv U Ftp) . Your dynamic ip could be your addres. only thing is. it changes everytime you disconnect from your Dsl connection. An ordinary person l ike me and many more have setup an FTP server, and probably you too could do it.

Protection for one is an issue but there are hardware out there like the Linksys Firewall gateway router for your
DSL line that will protect you from intruding forces.
They are easy to install .

For protection a Window 2000 have encryption program
that is included in their operating system and there are many protection programs you could buy out there. Also if you are using Alamode programs, what I know, they are using 128 bit encryption which is hard to uncrypt unless
somebody got Big and fast mainframe machine to do it.
Intruders only go to your system if you announce your FTP to the world and that where hackers may try to hack it. But if you and your co-workers only knew it, who would know, unless some hackers by chance stumble on it. I have my FTP for a long time and nobody have tried intruding on it.

I used FlashFXP ftp program in my computer. They are
very easy to install and configured. They got features
like when your connected and downloading and
the process stop for some reason, then you coukd connect again and continue from where you stop.

Unless you go to another company that offer this
kind of service, then both of you and companion have to be member and pay. And the time process for transfering
your file will double.

For server FTP http://www.serv-u.com/
For client http://www.flashfxp.ws/[/URL]

You could tried this software , they got trial version.

Just goes to show that there are many different ways to accomplish things, and which ever one works for you is the best one!

I'm confused...

Why wouldn't you just spend five minutes setting up a $10/month site named something like www.whitevalue.com and have the files transferred by tomorrow morning? You could even use a scheduled synchronization manager to automate your backups.

Is there some advantage to having your own server, besides the techno-fun?

Let's assume you are either someone who has the expertise to set up a server or have access to someone who can do this for you. The advantages of having your own server are:

1. You can set up as many domains and emails accounts as you want without paying extra - aside from the cost to register a domain and to buy the software needed support the web and email servers. However, the web server software comes free with Windows 2000 Professional (IIS). There are shareware programs for email software; however, you might want to purchase a good email server package such as Merak.

2. You can reconfigure your domains without any hassle. With webhosting, you have to get the web host to do this for you. E.g. with your own server you can more easily add and drop new websites.

3. Of course, with your own web server, there is no upload or download with FTP. You just need to make the changes on you local computer which serves as the web server. If the web server "manager" has the web server in his or her own office or home, this is a big convenience. Remote users would still have to ftp to the web server.

4. You can control the security on your own web server to whatever degree you want. Web hosts have their own policies. For example they might not allow an SSL certificate.

5. You can log every event on the web server, and get information on accesses and possible attacks ... you won't get all of this info from a web hosting company.

6. Overall there is a certain convenience to having your own server. But it comes at the cost of having to set it up and maintain it.

i'm no computer expert, but i know a REALLY good computer guy in FL that set our office up. We have about 15-18 appraisers in our office and almost all of them are set up to work from home. If you work on a file at home all you have to do is save it like you would in the office and you can open it up in the office without uploading or downloading anything anywhere. It's very fast and SO conveinent for those nights that you can't sleep, or those mornings when you just don't feel like getting out of your P.J.'s :D

"you can open it up in the office without uploading or downloading anything "

Now that sounds like it might be worth the trouble of setting up. I assume you have some sort of intranet set up that allows file sharing via the internet. Any of you technical guys have advice on how difficult it is to set up something like this?

Wow, Youre talking about Remote Access, and this are for people
who know how to administer a network.

This are deep stuff, and I recommend this only for somebody
who got some system administrator that will work with you.

Remote Acess is possible by

Dial Up (Modem to modem connection using dial up, need to have
a server and the ability to configured a Remote dial
connection )
Virtual Private Network (This is a connection through the internet
using a tunnel, with a lot of configuration, like a networking
protocol. I believe you need a domain name or
a register address in the internet so client could find your
server and resouces)

What more could I say, but this kind of connection is for big
companies

There's more than one way to skin a cat, of course. Companies often set up VPN (Virtual Private Network) for their employees so that they can log into the servers at the company and treat files on the company server as if they were accessing them from within the office. Of course upload and download is occuring - otherwise how would the data get from the office to home? It's just that's it's transparent (hidden or invisible) to the user.

FTP is a simpler and generic approach that will work for almost anyone. And it's built into a lot of software, so that user's don't have to explicitly upload and download each file. Macromedia's Dreamweaver and Microsoft's Frontpage are examples, because these programs are commonly used to develop pages for webservers remotely located at web hosting companies.

There are so many ways and programs for remote access, that I won't try to enumerate them. But FTP is universal.

We use a Firewall/VPN appliance from Watchguard Technologies. (www.watchguard.com).
This is a very inexpensive way for an office to start. You will need a broadband connection at the office and at the satelite location (home or branch).

The total Cost of Ownership is very reasonable. This particular solution costs less than $700.00

This Appliance supports Encryption for secure data encapsulation (DES and 3DES standards to be specific).
