That's why appraiser should take photo of CO detector at time of inspection.
Whether owner later decides to take it down or not insert batteries would be their issue.

Home Depot staff told me that the only way to determine difference between smoke det and combo det is to dissemble the devices to exam the batteries. I used to carry new devices in my car to install as needed-- Public Trust n all that crap-- but these days I can earn $5K annually on nearby 1004D assignments...

It is hard to tell especially when installed on ceiling. I would zoom my camera and sometimes have words indicating combo detector.
And I always ask the occupant exactly what it is.
One recent appraisal the combo was "high tech" seemed to be hardwired installed. I had to take occupant word what it was and of course with photos.
