Going To Work As Review Appraiser For Bank?

I am with you, Kevin. Just the though of going back to the commute and the 9-5 schedule is enough to drive me over the edge.

To whom it may concern!

Long ago and far away(!), I started out as a fee appraiser, enjoyed it and after earning my designation, went out on my own. That lasted about four years until a fast-track opportunity to become a chief appraiser of a regional bank arose. I took it and became VP within a year or so. With banking comes mergers! Lost the title and became a review appraiser for a larger institution, which didn't set too well at the time, but I stuck with it for several years. The pay was base plus bonus which, if you were willing to work long hours, was not bad at all.

The upside to the banking reviewer position, imho, was of course the regular benefits and perks, but more so, getting to know every appraiser on the block, the wealth of experience you gain from all sorts of property types you would never see in your daily practice, and most importantly, what a banker likes to see in a well written report--know how to be concise and make your point!

I mentioned mergers. In the last one, my well-paying position fell by the wayside. I was devestated---for about two days or so and went back into the fee world. That was a year ago. I look back now and truly appreciate the wealth of knowledge, experience and also the credentials (collectively called my bag of tricks) on a resume gained from the bank experience, but had I retired from that grind I would have been kicking myself in the pants until I was six feet under.

The other day I cracked open a fortune cookie, "In life there is no security, only opportunity".
