Jerry,

Please do pay attention to what Pat Butler said! AOL software gets into all sorts of places in your computer. Please get a specialist to work on getting it out and don't do this yourself. Voices of experience here.

Comcast is no better than AOL in terms of running their little fingers into plaes they got no bizness being. Same 'installs their own' Explorer and all sorts of adjunct snoop services. :sniper: I was getting 'probed' all the time.

I am still attempting to root out some tendrils that I though I chopped months ago when I cancelled the temp service I hooked up while out in CA. They keep resurfacing.

Roadrunner and Cox both mo betta.

Not that you have much choice when it comes to cable, you pretty much gotta take whatever runs down the block

True but you don't have to install "their" software. I am on cable and I just set up my computer myself. There is no needed additional software, Windows has everything you need. Granted their software makes it really simple but as others have point out it can (and most times will) load stuff on you computer you don't need! OR WANT!

Basically you just tell your computer to look for an internet connection over the network card. It doesn't care if you using a DSL, modem, cable or whatever. It just looks for the internet signal via your network card or modem.

Of course AOL is an exception to that rule.

2.2998 on Adelphia Digital Cable...."Smokin!" :usa:

Jeff;

When in CA I was TOLD (perhaps they were lying through thier nasty little teeth) that I HAD to install their software.. any you gotta KNOW I tried everything else first  ... anyplace else I had ever gone you just plugged and played using your own system.

Me no like Comcast. < understatement >

After google search I found about a bazillion hits on other foks gripes about the very same things... spyware, takeover of systems for their own nefarious purposes...

So I unplugged whenever I wasn't on-line... and way upgraded my personal security systems. it was unbeleive able what those systems caught in the way of Warner Bros attempting to snoop my system.

I am no guru but I's smart enough to figure out when someone has their slimy hand in my pocket or brain.

I haven't had any problems with Comcast at all. I was on @Home then ATT Broadband now Comcast all due to buyouts. When the tech came to install the @Home service I wouldn't let him install their software, just got all the pertinant settings and numbers to set up my router and e-mail. Then just made changes as necessary when the companies changed. The software these places install is all garbage, I wouldn't trust it on any of my machines. Runs cleaner and faster on plain old Internet Explorer and Outlook.

Don't even get me started on AOL

Scott:

They TOLD me they provided all that on the disc...
and they couldn't wouldn't give the data to me sans my installing their disc.

Course the guy was reaching for the disc when I grabbed his n=ahnd and said un-uh... don't go there... after several hours on the phones with their tech support people... they told me to use the disc or fergiddit

I thunked they were lying then and think so even today and would go back to dial up before going through THAT mess again.

jerks.

Lee Ann:

I would have kicked 'em out too!! I didn't have to deal with a Comcast tech, just the AT&T guy who did the @Home install. I already had a network up and running and the guy had no clue how to set up the router to talk to the modem (idiot!). He ended up giving me his phone to talk to his back office support to get the user ID's, POP3 server names etc. I'm sure that guy is now a Comcast guy toting the new company line. Anyway I've found their local support (in the office!!) to be pretty decent, better than when they were AT&T.

I used to have qwest for $93/month til it went out of business. Covad tried to take over, less speed for more money.

I signed up for the sbc/yahoo dsl, its in the Chicago area, the price is great, and just a little slower than what I had, but its also only $39.95 for business. At home it cost $26.99/month, fees at home came to about $150 for modem and yada yada yada.

I was almost to the point that my files would not download to some servers due to the time it was taking. Technology has been great.
