Yes, the curvature of the earth is the reasons some sections don't line up with each other, every six townships is adjusted for that curvature. Then the sections in each township along the north and west have lots instead of proportionate parts of a section. That is why you see lot numbers along the north part and west part of Sections 1 thrugh 6 and 6, 7, 18, 19, 30 and 31. And then if there is a mining claim or navigable river through a section, there will also be lots. A section affected by a township line can be way, way less than 640 acres or way way more than 640 acres. And then when there is some one that doesn't want to waste money on a survey decides to write their own legal description to save money that is when the odd shaped parcels that overlap or have gaps between the neighbors occur. There is a reason it takes more than eight years of education, training and experience to be come a registered land surveyor!
