Has Anyone Considered Diversifying Into Personal Property?

Appraisers are good with price vs value.

That's saleable to a car dealership. (sp?)

They all have one guy who barters and values the vehicles on lot from sellers, and to other dealers.

That one person can be a VIP of any car lot, constantly in touch with the owner and managers. You've got to know your effective ages of auto components though with emphasis on practical application to adequately estimate real world repair costs and depreciated value of every condition an automobile may experience under the sun.

In a perfect world, I'd love to be an auctioneer.

A few years back I had looked into Classic Car Appraisals, trying to combine a hobby with my appraisal experience. I believe it was a branch of the ASA that confers a Designation. This branch adheres to USPAP Guidelines, and they have their own education requirements.

At the time, I was deep into the courses needed for CG and I chose to pursue that to completion and not get involved with all new coursework.

And since then the Classic Car market has come down to earth (just like everything else). I might pursue the Classic Car appraisals now, as I get closer to retirement.

If you're older than the aforementioned vehicles, you may already be past retirement.
:fencing::fencing::fencing:

Just razzing you. The retirees typically know more about the classics anyways.

Ha-Ha....Razz Away MHT.

I figure a few grey hairs may lend a little Gravitas to an Appraisal of Classic Detroit Iron.

It would certainly be preferrable to a young whipper-snapper that doesn't know Hemi Heads from Fuelie Heads.

Let me call my senior mechanic to disseminate those terms, and I'll get back to you with another dead ringer.

I own thousands of records (albums) and music memorabilia and have thought about appraising those as I have a good knowledge of what they are worth.

Does anyone know if jewel appraisers are still basing their fees on the appraised value?

I used to own thousands of records, but dumped most of them after I found no market at all. Nobody wanted them at any price. I only kept the ones that had never been released on cd.

I don't know when you dumped them, but there is a market for old Lp's as very few Lp's are even pressed anymore, old records that routinely sold for $1.00-$3.00 sell for $4.00-$7.00 now. I know because I go to the Austin Record Convention every year and have seen the prices move up over the past few years.

I have also seen the prices of used records gradually increase here at the local record stores that still sell used vinyl, the prices have gone up about 30%-50% over the past few years.

Kim,
How do u become a GPPA?

Specifically for items like heavy equipment/construction equipment or aircraft?

Where do u find the best training and do u have to be registered/certified in each state that you do an appraisal in?

Do certifications/qualifications differ much from state to state?

Other than training and/or working under a mentor. What other requirements may be needed? Is a bachelor's degree required for the GPPA stuff I have listed here?

thanks :new_newbie:
