Mr. Jones,

You said.."Has It Slowed Down Enough For Everyone"

I say..."Is It Cold Or Snowed Enough In NORTHERN New Jersey For You"

You and your bank don't have enough money to get me to live/work in that God forsaken climate.

(Sorry, If you hadn't rubbed it in with your stupid "Slowed Down Enough" header, I might have just read your ad and laughed).

The answer to the question is:

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have almost TOO much work right now. As a matter of fact, I'm considering hiring someone else to help out (already have an office assistant).

Not everyone is slow. There are still ads running in the local paper for certified appraisers.

I've thought of moving further south but never north.

Seems like some people have the idea that the industry has gone BUST.

Dave in NC.

Dave in NC,

I would say come to Tampa, but it got down to 60 degrees today. I almost had to put on shoes and long pants.

I'm really glad to here that you are all busy.

If I posted an ad in the newspaper looking for a position in July I'd be lucky to get 1 phone call. Now in December, the phone doesn't stop ringing with people looking to join our company. I wish these certified appraisers had vision last summer. I filled most postitions with Trainees and they are working out well. Now the certified appraisers are out in the "cold"

I do love Fla. by the way. A great place to visit!!!

Christopher,

Your last post there kinda reminds me of when the AMCs are soliciting for fee appraisers. They lace their pitch with somewhat dark hints that if appraisers won't sign up with them while times are busy and take the big hit now, they'll have to take the big hit later when business slows down. As if the supply/demand dynamic is somehow different for large organizations with large overheads than it is for small operators with tiny overheads. What I know about staffing levels for appraisal departments at the banks is that when times get that slow they start jettisoning their people. After all, we are all nothing more than expendable assets. This puts those folks out on the street at exactly the wrong time. Ever hear of how long the average span of employment for a staff appraiser is? Three years. How many appraisers do you know who have retired from World at the age of 65, having worked there for at least 10 years?

There are some legitimate reasons to go to work for a bank, but (IMO) job security isn't one of them. Or at least, it shouldn't be. What I think you should be pushing are the other benefits of working on staff. The chance for professional advancement, the more advanced training, the availability of mentoring by virtue of association with your senior appraisers. Even the health benefits and the retirement plans (401K is a better option than a proprietary pension plan because they can take it with them when they leave). Heck, most of those trainees would have never gotten a legitimate shot except for your bank. I would have never earned my General Cert had it not been for a bank. But job security? Gimme a break.

Just out of curiosity, what's your company's policy about hiring appraisers over the age of 50? How many of those 9 appraisers that you guys hired this year are over 50? While we're at it, seeing as how the average age of appraisers is 47, what's the average age of actual staff appraisers for your bank in the NJ areas you are soliciting for? 'Cause I think I'd be real disappointed if it were under 35. If the average age is under 47, are there any reasons you can attribute for it? FYI, I'm under the age of 47. May I inquire if you're older or younger?
