How to get business?

you are talking about an insurance adjuster. If he chooses to switch into that field then yes , it applies.
 
Lots of interesting ideas here. I'm not sure a shortage of VA appraisers equals a shortage of appraisers in the counties on the VA list. There will be far fewer transactions in these areas than in the metro area where I live. I wonder if it would be worth it to set up a mail drop in one of the counties on the VA list, sign up with some AMCs, and see if I get orders. I'd have to scurry up there to do the inspections, but it would tell me if moving there is worth it.

I don't think working in any real estate related job is feasible right now. All of the title, escrow, and mortgage companies are dead slow due to lack of transactions.

NO. FEMA are not insurance adjusters. They are damage estimators. They inventory the damage

FEMA is not a damage estimator. FEMA is the federal disaster agency. They may contract out for insurance adjusters or other needed services in a disaster. An insurance company would be overwhelmed with claims in a disaster and pay to send their own people as well. Each situation is different.

Go read FEMA's website. They assess damage whether you have insurance on the place or not.
 
I have been certified for a little over one year. I purchased an AMC list, and I also signed up with all the AMCs on this site. I have three AMCs that send me requests for bids, but I get very few orders. Not even two a week, and the fees are very low. For the record, I have had better luck with the AMCs on this site than the ones in the purchased list.

I have read about non-lender assignments, but I don't know how to get them. There is a coaching website that has a program to teach you how to do them and get them, but I'm not sure it is worth $300. The only reason it might be worth that much to me is that it provides templates for these reports. Since I have very little experience in this area, I could use the templates. I don't know what comments and addendums would be required for these types of reports.

Any ideas to keep from starving?

It's a tough environment to be trying to add clients right now. You just need one or two good clients to stay in business. Those one or two clients might change over the years. I never needed more than three good clients. During the pandemic, I ended up with four and unfortunately had to stop working with one due to capacity issues. Now I am down to two good clients again.
You are right. I finally hooked up with a smaller AMC that sends me lots of orders. Combined with the smattering of orders I get from some large AMCs, I'm really busy now.

Remember Farm Girl? Jason Self? A few others ex-forumites that are on FB are inspectors for FEMA. It's good money, requires travel, etc. But beats sitting at home and working nightshift at 7-11
 
With appraising it's, today your on who's who. Tomorrow, it's who are you.

The big problem is how much have you saved up to wait out a down turn. Been thru many, making good money and at times hanging by fingers as they say.

Right now, out of boredom, i have gone back to fix and flip.
I knew many res appraisers who worked into their 80's.
But those were different times. There is no future for this profession. Maybe for a few, but not at current numbers.
