HP 12c Calculator

I actually heard this question asked (seriously) during the Stats class. The instructor offered to show the student during the break.

So did the instructor do an adequate job insuring that you knew how to perform the calculations during the break? LOL (I couldn't resist) Best wishes PL

Mean on HP12C

As far as I am aware the HP 12C doesn't do medians and modes. You can either do them in your head or use a spreadsheet. HP does have a bunch of learning modules for the 12C found here: http://h20331.www2.hp.com/Hpsub/cache/299940-0-0-225-121.html

Σ+ is a special key that is found on the lower right of your keyboard. It is used when calculating a mean.
is a blue function that is found on the bottom of the Zero key, also on the lower right. We will also use this key in calculating a mean.
Basically, we are going to enter a group of numbers and press the Σ+ key after each one. When we are done – we press the key and let it calculate the mean for us.
Let’s find the mean of 23, 45, and 112. Please get out your 12C and follow along.
First make sure to clear the statistical registers by pressing F CLEAR Σ. The Σ is found on the left side (look in the red oval above) on top of the SST key. Then proceed as follows:
23 Σ+
45 Σ+
What do you see in the display now?
It says 2.00 (assuming you have it set to two decimal places). It is counting up the entries for you. If you were working your way through a long series of numbers and got interrupted or lost your place, your 12C will tell you that you just entered the 9th or 11th item or wherever you were.
OK, continue with the entries
112 Σ+
Now we can go directly to finding the mean. We don’t have to count up the entries and divide by that number. We just enter:
g
The answer that appears is 60.00. That’s your mean!

The median of your set is 45. HP-12s don't have a median function. It is easy enough to find in a short sorted list of numbers. The mode is the value that appears most often and the median is the middle value.

That is correct. Mean function only on the hp12C

after inputing you numbers, press G"0" to get the mean; then press G(.) to get the standard deviation. Helps put the numbers in a context.
