HUD issued key

Hey, I'm in negotiations with a new client and they have asked me for something that nobody has ever asked for before. They want, along with all the regular stuff, (e & o, license, resume etc.) a copy of my drivers license. Their stated reason is that they have a HUD FHA contract and that HUD requires this because they are going to issue me a key. I have never heard of such a thing and it definately makes me nervous as we all know about identity theft. I'm curious to know if anyone else has had such a request or has heard of this. I have found nothing on HUD to verify this. I'm also wondering why FHA work would need a key? REO I understand, but this is supposedly not that from what I pick up. I'd like to know if anyone has experienced something similar before I go back to this potential client.

In Florida, Drivers License info is a matter of public record, it may be in your state also. So, its probbaly not a big deal.

To the best of my knowledge its not. Even if some data were available, age, address, so on, a copy of my license is not. I'm really interested about the HUD issued key thing.

They want your driver's license so that the children of those in their office who are under 18 have an ID to go joy riding and buy beer on the weekends ! I wouldn't be concerned.

They will issue a master key which will allow you to access all HUD homes.

Do you have one? I do have one for FNMA REO homes so I get the idea. But I didn't have to give my license to get it. Fannie sent an e-mail with the kwik set key # and I had one made by a local locksmith.

They most likely do HUD REO appraisals. The M&M will issue the HUD Key. I have one for my area. I don't have a problem with them asking for my DL information.

Approximately 10 years ago we had the HUD foreclosure contract in Milwaukee and they issued the keys to us. This was a direct contract with HUD and our office and I can not remember if they required DL. Who is asking for your DL, HUD or a secondary party?

Secondary party. AMC. I know, I know. Don't work for them. But there is no issue with fees or anything else at this point and I won't work for peanuts, been there done that. I have no problem if HUD were to do this directly. I appreciate the responses and will advise as things go forward.

In the days of "yore," asking for an FHA appraisal had to be made through FHA. If the house was vacant, FHA requested a house key for access.....which they sent along with the appraisal order to the appraiser. I have never heard of it in modern times, however.

The whole thing sounds suspicious. I would call the regional HOC for clarification.
