Raman, it stands for Continuing Education. Depending on what state you're in, you are required to obtain a certain number of hours in order to renew your license.

Too many people take CE to meet state requirements then sleep through class. I've had some GREAT CE courses, ask around for the good instructors. Ann O'Rourke put on a great 2 day course for trainees on the new URAR, where they went over it line by line, like the AI book does. I don't think she's offering it this year, but maybe someone else will.

I'm way over my CE requirements, 1 year ahead of time and will continue to take courses that interest me as they come up. You meet great people there, and learn a lot if you pick a good class with a good instructor.

Great instructors I've had:

Tracy Martin - McKissock (she can make ANYTHING entertaining, and you'll learn a LOT from her)

Brad Ellis - one of our own here on the forum

Richard Hagar - he knows tons about mortgage fraud.

Steven R. Smith (Southern California) - I've heard people say to take ANYTHING he's involved in. http://appraisersforum.com/appraisal-education/114796-appraising-declining-market-seminar.html

Rachel Dollar - on mortgage fraud and how to not get sued.

Rich Heyn - manufactured homes

There's another class that Steven R. Smith recommends and others say it's the best class they've ever taken. I haven't taken it yet, but it's the Technical Inspection of Real Estate http://www.beckmancompany.com/.

Anyone else have recommendations?

My intent was only stating a simple definition for Raman...not to imply that's all the hours that should be taken. IMO, if you are interested in something....if you need extra help with something.....etc etc etc.....definately take extra classes.....you can never have too much information.

That wasn't directed at you Susan - it's just that too many trainees I've met leave CE to the last minute, considering it an annoying requirement to stay licensed, instead of an opportunity to learn more.

I was hoping it wasn't, I didn't really think it was....:)

I completely agree with you....I was just in a CE class a few weeks ago where 2 people during lunch approached the instructor and asked it they could get their certificate so they could leave early. It's so sad that an instructor has to wait until the very end of class so as to insure people comply with the requirements. A room full of adults.....sheesh!

If you can, take the 7-hour USPAP update from Stephanie Coleman, and I highly recommend Dawn Molitor-Genrich as an instructor. She is hands down the BEST instructor the Appraisal Institute has, and she teaches a variety of subjects.

To: Cynthia, Jodie and Susan, thanks so much for all the information that was awesome. It is so wonderful to have a forum that I can ask these questions and get answers. So once agian thanks

Raman
