I'm Walking Away

I've basically come to terms that this career is not a good fit for me. I just can't grind out reports. I get too focused on producing A+ quality reports every time and that doesn't pay the bills. Case in point, I'm currently about a week late on a bowling alley appraisal and have another report due in a couple of days that I've hardly touched. It's just not worth the stress anymore.

I've got a couple of leads on jobs in the banking industry that I'm pursuing. Had a meeting last week that went well and it sounds like I'd be a perfect fit for a commercial underwriter position that should be opening up soon. Pay will probably be at least what I'm making now, if not more, and no more working nights and weekends.

I've seriously considered just putting in two weeks notice even before I get another job lined up. We've got enough saved up to last 4-5 months and my health insurance is through the National Guard anyways. Very tempting to just walk away right now.
I would advise against quitting until you definitely have another job offer. There is no reason to blow through your savings if you don't have to and 4-5 months can go by awfully quickly when it comes to getting a new job. In any case, I wish you the best of luck wherever you end up working.

Well I just got an email this morning that I was selected for a federal job that I interviewed for back in November. I thought I hadn't got it but apparently it just took a really long time for them to get me approved. Should receive the formal offer next week. It will still take a month or two for the final approval it sounds like but I'm glad I didn't do the rash thing when I was stressed out. On top of that I have an interview Monday for a full-time job with the National Guard and a very good chance at an underwriter position with a local bank based on my meeting with the head person there.

Good news and congratulations!

that's awesome news! It sounds like you are going to have several options....congratulations, I wish you and your family nothing but success!

Michael: Congrats on the new opportunities! I did several years full-time national guard. It was my all-time favorite job.

I just got hired on by my state for a non-appraisal position that I’ve been chasing for awhile.

All are great opportunities, Congrats!

But then it seems like half of the appraisers can do two in a 8-10 hour day so $600 base fee doesn't make sense either.

6 a week seems my max. After that it’s burnout. I average about 400 when all types taken into consideration. That’s good money at 400 with no kids at home. If I had to raise a family on that it would be tough. Still not as good a a job with benefits and vacation pay and no cost of doing business expenses. Probably average 250 a year some years more. So that’s about 100,000 gross. After taking out cost of insurance, business costs, employer half of SS not much left really.

Yes, totally agree.

Actually I would advise most people to sell real estate. It seems far more reasonable, with less time and money spent to try and make a go as an agent for most people. As a broker, I know this first hand. I made a lot more $$$ selling real estate than I do appraising real estate. I just got burned out on it. Doesn't mean I won't switch back one of these years.

I earned the most money when I was selling and doing appraisal work. I had a really good real estate buisiness built up. All I was doing was listing property off of referrals. Then I would do 3 maybe 4 appraisals a week. It added some variety for one thing. I regret giving up the selling business, because it’s hard to get back into since all the “blue sky” you build up goes away.

For me filling out the forms with the UAD etc. and just doing the same thing over and over and over again is monotonous. It’s a grind. After 21 years in the business I have a few years left until I collect SS and Medicare. It will be like having a really big bowel movement.:)

Good advice. I quit my job at the end of 2010 in order to have enough time to finish my degree. I started looking for a new job in 2012 and didn’t find one until 2015. Good thing I could solo gig my work, but I much prefer a salaried job. It can be tough out there, so good to have your ducks in a row if possible.
