I just spent about 2 hours getting familiar with Davinci and my new iPad. As I suspected, it operates a lot like the old pocket Total. The interface is intuitive, sketching is easy, very readable in sunlight and abut a third of the weight of my Motion Tablet (which will be for sale shortly :-). I'm used to actually moving the file from one device to another, so the sync thing is going to take a little getting used to.

rg im all about saving time and posted a month or so ago the number of items my android phone has replaced and i embrace any time saving alternative i can get my hands on. but sketching in the field versus a good 'ole mouse and a 90 second townhouse sketch doesnt make sense to me.
For me, sketching in the field is about being more productive and efficient with my time on site. It's part of the advantage of using a laser to measure. The laser is not faster since you still must walk around the house, but with the laser you are free to enter the measurements into the sketch while you walk rather than unrolling the tape. I also don't think I can over emphasize the advantage of having your area calculation in the field. Knowing the house is a few hundred square feet larger or smaller than you thought it would be while you are at the site can save hours of time. You can talk with the homeowner about the discrepancy, alter the comps you drive by, and catch errant measurements. If you just consider the sketch, then making it in the field does not make sense. It is only in the overall process that the advantages are apparent. The last time I carried a clipboard while inspecting was in 2003.

i am all about techno-wizardry but i dont get the time saving factor of doing a sketch in the field when a typical sketch takes only minutes. what am i missing?

I agree with you. Ill jot it down on my pad and make it nice and pretty when I sit to type the report. Lugging extra equipment around doesnt appeal to me. More stuff for the hoodlums to try and take from you....
