But are these sand/gravel operations or rock quarries with mining, crushing and blasting. I lived in MI for a few years; most all I saw was sand and gravel operations.

Around here, nobody cares about the sand/gravel pit operations. The limestone quarries with the mining and blasting is a serious external issue.
