Just Took A Mckissock Course...

Some of the worst classes I've ever taken were by McKissock. One was a class on AVMs/modeling (can't remember the exact title) Anyway, the course covered NO practical information despite the course description promising to teach us how to use statistics with appraising. Never once, did the attendees even need to break out a calculator or spreadsheet. Matt McKissock was in the process of developing an online AVM for appraisers and the class spent too much time talking about that- which, by the way, is illegal to do here in Illinois.

Another course was in Indiana for which I drove about 5 hours. I can't honestly remember what it was about but all I remember is that the instructor kept bragging about his appetite for visiting strip clubs in every large city that he taught at. I made the mistake of going out to lunch with this guy (this is before he started bragging) and was absolutely embarrassed at how he talked in the restaurant. This guy was married too, and his language and morals were pathetic.

There was a third class I took in Illinois and it was so-so. Just my experience with McKissock.

My opinion on Jim's first post is neutral, I think everyone is entitled to their opinion of CE courses and their instructors. Obviously you'd want keep the language clean, but otherwise I welcome truthful feelings on such matters.

His reaction to being offered a free voucher/class is a little over the top though, IMHO, as that is simply McKissock's policy. I took several CE classes through McKissock here this past year or so, and they have a type-written (ok, laser printed) Money Back deal if you're not happy, that they pass out at the beginning of every class. So I think Jim's comeback about "buying" his business was a little out of line, especially for those of you all here who may be reading/hearing about McKissock for the first time. The McKissock employee that posted the offer was not attempting to "buy" anyone's business or even their approval, she was simply acting on the school's own satisfaction policy. At least that's my read on it.

And no, I am not affiliated with McKissock in any way other than as a past student of some of their courses. Honestly, I've had boring classes taught to me from McKissock, The Institute, and all types in-between, so I can't see lambasting any one more than the others...especially just for having a money back or free voucher policy in place for folks that genuinely feel they haven't gotten their money's worth.

I think going into a class like that, you have to consider your own level of understanding, knowledge and experience. Jim, you may have far more experience in high end homes than 75% of the people who attended the class. The name interested you, because you do them. The name interested the others, because they do not. They may have learned a lot. Perhaps you should develop and teach a similar course?

DOn,

What states are you getting your cruise CE approved for?

B) Bill,

The folks I am doing the cruise for will be trying to get it approved in all states. I will let you know if I find out for sure that any state will not accept it.

In re to McKissock or any other provider. McKissock is a fine organization. I was the 2nd instructor ever hired by them. Any course that is taught is only as good as the instructor I don't care if it is the AI, McKissock, NAIFA, Lincolng Graduate Center(NAMA), or who the provider is. I do not disparage any provider. But, there is at least 1 instructor I will never want to see on a podium again, and no, he is not with McKissock or the AI. Nuff said. And, there are some AQB Instructors that should not be teaching others as well. Nuff said.

I disagree Don, as I posted, the intructor for my class was OK. The power point and the text were awful!

B) Hank,

Then that is another issue. However, I have never used power point. I use transparencies. I have had a student who could only find one thing wrong with my course, the fact that I did not use power point. Now, I don't consider that a legitimate comment. If I have a decent handout, and use visuals that are relevant, and my comments are instructive, then not using a power point should not be a real concern. But, if as you say, the text and power point are both not sufficient, then that is a concern.

Even though I'm commercial, it's real good to have McKissock around.

I took two online courses and one in person just in the last two or three months.

I'm definitely a supporter.

________

Hey, Bobby, you write:

"I slept through 90% of my courses for 8 consecutive
semesters. I wonder if I'm entitled to a refund?"

Easy there, Fella -- your client(s?) will be asking the same question... :D

Speaking of supporters, you're a bit of an Athletic Supporter ( ) aren't you? Why aren't you watching Women's Tennis on NBC right now?

Would you believe this girl is six feet tall?

Really

McIinroe just mentioned it.
