Laser Measuring Device

The Disto sounds great. I just have a few questions. When your measuring, lets say a simple ranch, do you just put the disto up against the wall and shoot accross the front? What do you do about downspouts that might come down the wall just before the end?

Now Doug, tell us the truth, had you been drinking that day?
Isn't that why you were crawling on your hands and knees?

Gee, Doug, I hope Matt is giving you a kick back for the good
words you've said about the Disto.

Referrals from satisfied users are always worth more than the
words of a sales person as far as advertising worth goes.

Cliff:

The downspouts make good targets. You have to bounce the laser off something at the end of the wall.

Cliff,

You'll quickly learn to eyeball the house as you walk up and to make the wall measurements without easy targets from the inside

Bouncing the beam off the gutter is OK but in bright daylight the red dot is invisible outside.

It's best to measure from the inside when sunny-no different than with a condo unit but you add for the thickness of the walls.

I take bright yellow sticky notes with me on a clip board and when I need a "target" .... I stick one on .... I use a 4x8 clipboard as opposed to the larger ones. Sometimes, depending on the location of the downspout, I can just stick the whole clipboard in there and use it as a target. For siding homes, I pickup a piece of siding from a construction site and the lip on the siding is great for just clipping onto a corner and then shooting the Disto. I keep the siding velcro'd to the back of my Disto, so it is always handy.

Always remember who "invention's" mother was!!! ;)

distos are great for interior condos etc.. But I have seen them screw up after about 30 Feet. i guess it was the cheap one I was using. I have also seen people so lazy that they don't even look across the room to make sure it's hitting the wall. The insurance adjuster that came to our house after Hurricane Charley did this, and I said what did you get? He told me the measurement as he wrote it down. I then asked him to see the disto, I fired and came up with a measurement 2Ft more than he did. I then told him he hit the lamp instead of the wall. <_<

I then called him lazy kicked him out of the house and told him to go back to Texas where he came from.....

Eric,

Was he using a DISTO or an ultrasonic measuring device?

As always, a DISTO is only as good as the person using it. If you can't aim it, you won't get the measurement you need. Fortunately, it's pretty simple. My son figured out how to take a measurement with the DISTO when he was 2 1/2 yrs old. ;)

I just finished doing a 2 story home that is on the national historical register. It had more twists and turns and offsets than any property I have ever seen. Did it all .... in a flat pouring rain ... (Frances fallout) and got it done in about 15 minutes. My Disto has been checked against every tape of every person (read appraiser) that has ever been with me when I used it. I measured a 55,000 sf manufacturing plant in record time and when I finished I stopped by the maintenance office for a floor plan and checked my measurements against the blueprints on the wall ... 100% on the money .... Sounds to me like your man was using one of the sonics with a laser pointer .... they do alright for what they do .... but other than that ...they ain't much punkin .... and are NOT comparable to a Disto in any regard other than they both make measurements .... but only one does it accurately ... ;)

 Matt... too funny. But how many cats have you distracted lately?
