I never even touched a laser so I don't know what the major selling points are....

I surmise a couple selling points are accuracy and convenience....
How accurate can a laser be if the human has to guessimte the thickness of the walls???

A $15.00 measuring tape is probably just as accurate....

I'll admit I was late to embrace cellphone and GPS and now won't leave home without either....

Thanks for all the replies. I started this thread bc the most recent laser post was 6 months old. coming from the tech field, 6 months is enough time for a new software or tool to surpass all the others.
Since I have been trained on tape & paper, I am comfortable with it.
I am just getting my license, so I do plan on starting the year with tape and getting into laser sometime this summer.

It sounds like sunlight/ obstacles are the biggest issues with laser. obstacles effect tape too, so basically the red dot issue.
red sunglasses are cool!

My next concern is the transfer of measurement from paper to digital.

At the very least you should get a $20 laser from Lowes for shooting the interior walls, ceilings, and outside when there are bushes/obstacles in the way. That is a no-brainer. You will use it more and more then one day you will leave the tape in the car and not lug it around. You will realize that the laser is easier, quicker, and more accurate and you start to measure things you weren't able to before like ceiling height. You keep the tape in the car just in case, but realize that you haven't used it in 6 months. You think back to the AppraiserForum user that gave you the advice and you wish you had their address to send a thank you note.... No worries, DM me for the address. :)

well for $600 my leica is a POS. the bosch i use as a backup has never gone wacky on me but my leica freezes, restarts or the laser wont shine sometimes unless i restart even with fresh batteries. think i might have got a lemon.

i would say you do. i have been using my D5 for many, many years and never experienced anything like you describe.

I’ve been disappointed with my Disto D5 for for measuring long distances in the sun. I really miss the old Distos were it had a telescopic View finder. Haven’t tried the newer ones, but if I was in the market for one I would look at a Bosh.

the D5 does have a telescopic camera. i use it all the time.

I mean like the one in the older models where you put your eye into a telescopic viewer like a rifle. It was easier to spot the red dot this way. At least for me.

On my 3rd Lieca Laser for 15 yrs. Still don't use the bluetooth the new Disto X4 doesn't connect the last time I tried.

I have one of the original Disto bricks. I used it for several years. I now use a much smaller Disto.

One of the most mind-boggling things I have come across is that after almost 20 years of the laser being mainstream there are still people that still need to be convinced that it is an improvement. I guess it is generational. It makes me think of when people had light bulbs in the house and the neighbors were like "I have these candles that work just fine, why would I change?"

I have to imagine that companies like Leica are frustrated that there are still tape users in the market, but change takes time.

Most appraisers are behind the times when it comes to technology. Had a guy tell me the other day he spends no less than a week on each appraisal. In this day in age, with all of the tools available to you to get through an inspection without touching paper, or a tape measure, and having that data taken at the inspection directly uploaded into a report, I cannot see how it would take 7 days to turn around a basic assignment. It's absurd. I don't know how these guys afford a meal or maintain clients.
