Long Island Beaches- DEADLY WEEKEND

New Yorkers may not be educated in how to swim out of a rip current like we Floridians are (parallel to the beach). We get the memo every spring.

Having been a Lifeguard on those beaches for 10 yrs - the "memos" abound.

p.s. floridians drown too. amazing huh?

Wow, one of them was killed by the Belle Harbor Beach in Queens, I go there many times...

Kennedy is right. There is plenty of warning around here. Those that drown are typically children who panic, poor swimmers(city folks out for the day) and drunks. THat was my experience in my 5 years @ Jones Beach. Shame.

That's who always drown in my area... and most boat wrecks are caused by these same people who rent a boat and have never navigated on water before. Hell, they don't even know what the red/green lights on the front mean!! They'll rent a pontoon and run docking lights all night long, or until DNR gets 'em and gives them a big phat tickit. :)

Sad news. Sounds like a good time for all to simply forego getting in over your knees, despite the temptation.

I have a market value client that I completed a report for about a month ago. Elderly couple and both are facing some serious health issues, and time to move into assisted living. Somber enough, but when I called to schedule the appointment to go over the results, we had to delay as she'd just lost her 52 year old son in rip tides off the coast of Costa Rica. He was down there on missionary work, and no posting of such dangers could be found. Apparently this was supposed to be one of the more notoriously dangerous water areas, but they fail to let the visitors know.
