I'm a licensed appraiser. I'm employed by a county tax assessor for ad valorem appraisal work. I'm interested in doing some fee work on the side in the county I reside in (which is different than the one I'm employed in.)
My problem is all I've ever done is appraisal work for the county assessor. I've never done fee work...we call it the 'fee world'. So I'm a little confused as to where to start...
Should I contact a couple of the local appraisers in my area and ask them about mentoring me until I get going? I emailed one of the local appraisers that is located near my house about it. I'm a little nervous about it...I know (atleast here) there is that unspoken 'dividing line' between fee appraisers and the ad valorem appraisers.

I've taken my courses, I know my job, and I understand the rules and regulations...but some of the rules and regulations and general practice are slightly different when it comes between me (ad valorem appraiser) and the fee world.

Any advice....and be gentle. :o)

Lindsay,

My advice go in person to talk to these people. Most phone and emails are fine for trying to set up an appointment, but, face to face is the only way to go. Good luck and there are some Colorado appraisers that may be able to give you better advice on things to do and what to look for.

You mean you would like to get into "real" appraisal???? Start calling!

1.Buy lunch for a local appraiser.

2.Join a professional association.

3. Ask appraisers who you meet at the assessors office for guidence.

4. Talk to local real estate brokers.
