Hello All,

Any input from the veterans would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance.
I am recently turned certified res and I want to join either the MBREA or AI (or both). I wanted to just check with the board and see if most go with one vs the other or both? What advantages do you get besides designations and class discounts?

I voted both; I am not a member of the MBREA but I am a member of a similar organization in California (REAA).
The AI and REAA are complimentary (IMNSHO) in what they offer to an appraiser.

The significant benefit of joining the AI is (a) the discount in the education offerings members receive and (b) the opportunity to obtain a nationally recognized designation.
(full disclosure: I have the residential and commercial designation from the AI). The designation doesn't, by itself, make one a better appraiser. The process of obtaining the designation requires certain educational steps; gaining the education is what has made me a better appraiser.

The significant benefit of the local group (REAA in my case) is that its primary focus is on residential issues. They have educational benefits as well.

Joining a professional appraisal organization is a positive step in one's career (again, IMNSHO). You can become active in your group, and there are networking benefits. I advise you look into both organizations and weigh the benefits given your specific objectives at this time.
However, if are going or want to go down the commercial path, then I'd recommend the AI... period.

Good luck!

I voted NONE as I'm not a member of either

I have considered AI numerous times, but for this or that reason haven't pulled the trigger yet. (Edit: If I do join an organization, it would be the AI)

I would vote for both as well. Belonging to an organization and participating in it, in whatever capacity you can, is good. Join, meet people, and be enthusiastic. Congrats on your recent certification as well.

Thanks for the info. The poll is pretty split at the moment. Ill probably end up signing up for both.

I'm assuming (based on the OP's "location") Massachusetts's Board of Real Estate Appraisers
...I could be wrong
Gee...I wonder why I would join that? :rof: How about just NAR? Yes, I am a member and I am a member of a local appraisal group and a state group.
