The insurance companies in Texas recently gave an explanation as to why they wanted higher rates. As part of that, they stated that the average mold abatement claim was over $37,000. Further, insurance companies are refusing to write the typical homeowner's policy that includes mold coverage without extreme price hikes or are refusing to write this coverage altogether. Some companies will write the coverage but limit the claim level to $5000. Finally, if you have water or mold in the home in the last 2-5 years, it is very difficult to sell the home as it is virtually impossible to get a homeowners policy, which is required for a typical mortgage.
