re: Mold and/or mildew

I found this intersting:

<span style='color:darkred'>

1) What is mildew and is it different than mold?

"What is mildew?" The answer depends on whether you ask a scientist or a nonexpert. Mycologists, who study fungi, use the term "mildew" only for fungi that grow on plants. When mycologists say "Mildew," they mean the white growth that causes diseases in plants.

People who are not scientists use the term "mildew" differently. For them, mildew is the discoloration caused by mold in buildings. The molds that grow around windows or in bathrooms are called "mildew."

Is mildew different than mold? The mycologist would say they are different. Mildew only grows on plants outdoors. The nonexpert, however, sees the effects of mold growing indoors and calls it "mildew."

Webster's College Dictionary 1997.

Mildew....1. any fungus that attacks various plants or appears on organic matter, paper, leather, etc. esp. when exposed to damp, resulting in a thin, furry whitish coating or discoloration 2. any such coating or discoloration 3. any plant disease caused by such fungus

Mold.......1. a downy or furry growth on the surface of organic matter, caused by fungi, esp. in the presence of dampness or decay 2. any fungus producing such a growth

Moldy Oldy.....what some of us appraisers will become someday.

I think the key is "whitish coating or discoloration" But CYA would dictate just calling it an 'possible fungus'. Let the experts scrape it and analyze it.

Interesting. But it makes my point. We are not experts and I just state I saw something. If you got a problem call a spert. I am assuming it's nuttin' to worry about. a

Like I was taught as a home inspector. State what you saw and nothing more. Its the elaboration and extra words that come around and bite you on the backside.

I know how you feel, though, about calling CPS. I had the same thing, not just mold but cat feces everywhere and a sick baby in a bed not moving with a fever. My heart hurt for weeks. We see that side of the world every day and can't help all. I've come very close many times. :(

Suein...

Be careful about calling CPS. I think you would be shocked if you get on the internet and search for CPS problems. Remember its not abuse nor a crime to be poor. Many times something you observe can be fixed by a call to a local church or womens group.

Trust me, I am one of many very sensitive and socially concious men who do there part for the plight of the weak and helpless.

Yes, for that very reason I've never called. I am the first one to send food or ask if there is anything or anyone I can call to help though. I make dinners or order pizza to be sent. Sometimes less fortunate isn't just poor either. Just needy in general. Being a compassionate person makes it really difficult to pass by, but sometimes has to be done. The hardest ones are the ones clearly abusing the system. :x
