I have an AOPEN 56x cd rom and it does not wanna read cd's.
It usually happens when you have to look up something urgent on sales data software.
Did anyone have this problem?
Sincerely,
Sam

Have you purchased the cleaning kit, and made sure it's clean?

Sounds like time for a new one. I have had the same thing happen. Intermittenly work. Ended up replacing it. That solved it too.

Bill: Which cleaning kit did you refer to?
Jeff: It's not an old system, just 6 months.
Thank's
Sam

For about six bucks one gets a CD with lil brushes on it .. runs through the cycle and whisps loose any dust .. helps to blow out the unit, first and after. Being optical it needs to be really clean.

Also helps to open your case (power off, plug disconnected) and carefully push on all connectors to insure that they're completely seated ..

Sam,

If you get it reading the CD's again..next time create a directory on your hard drive and copy the CD there. I learned the hard way when a zoning map CD became scratched and would no longer read.

Plus, it's faster to read them off the hard drive and to leave the CD as a back-up.

Chaim,

The lens cleaner that airphoto is refering to looks like a regular CD only it has these little tiny brushes on it in one spot (looks like toothbrush bristles). When the CD spins in your drive, the brushes clean any dust or debris off the lens (the part that reads the CD). You can compare a few prices and see them here.

Hope that helps.

Another way to determine if it is a "read" error is to put in a music CD and see if it plays .....

Have you recently installed any new software? Sometimes certain software packages will cause this problem .... Particularly CD burning software and some "juke box" and/or file management software ... Let me know because there are several places on the web to restore the "read" function after a registry error ...

Definitely get the cleaner... particularly if you smoke or someone in the house smokes ..... dangerous little film, that nicotine ...

If it won't play a music CD and you have cleaned it and you haven't installed new software, it is time to call that warranty into play .... those things go bad everyday ... I have replaced a ton of them .... particularly in laptops .... general dust, max usage and time all play a factor on these things ... and sometimes, they just go bad for no real reason at all .... they are cheap though especially if it is just a CD Rom and not a CD/R .... I can recommend several places to buy these and other parts very cheaply ...

Good luck with it!!

Doesn't matter. Brand new one's die too. Sometimes they don't make it off the assembly line working!

Thank's to all of you for your generous replies, I have a feeling it's my COMPSINC (sales data) software that is killing my cd drive. I had it a couple of times the cd stalled while working with this particular software. I would have it easier if it was on my hard drive, but this software requires the disc in the drive. I am not a computer expert, I don't know how to bypass this.
Thank's anyway.
It's a pleasure posting here!
