My measuring tape degrading

I grabbed one of my tape measure and in horror when I was stretching and measuring, the tape was hard to pull and the surface of the tape was coming out making my fingers powdery white. Ugh.
Never happened before. Cheap old home depot tape.

The white stuff from the tape rather sticky. Hope it's not toxic.
I still don't trust Disto to measure to the tenth feet.
