I have been a faithful laptop user for many, many years. I am afraid I need to update my laptop before I have to replace it. What are you guys using and what do you like and/or recommend? Old faithful is a DELL Latitude E5430. I am have not posted here much, but frequently visit for insight and info. GO

Lenovo Yoga's get good reviews (sturdy). Depends on how much you want to spend. I have a two year old HP Spectre 13 (thin/light) that I like. HPs are popular again, something to consider.

Dec 1, 2017 - Last updated: December 01, 2017. 0 SHARES. Can you actually find a decent laptop for less than $500? Absolutely—as long as you're not expecting cutting-edge performance or a design that will turn heads at the local Starbucks. The sub-$500 laptops listed below aren't the most powerful computers on ...

Samsung! Certain models have very easy access to internals. Meaning you can upgrade/replace the HD very easily. I have a SF410. I have replaced the HD in it one time. Not because it failed, but because it was getting old and its mechanical. So I mirrored it to a new one, then installed it. Walla one less hardware failure to worry about. Now I am looking at buying a new Samsung with two drives. Old style HD and SSD.

Just as a side note. Life of my laptops seem to be very high. That's partly because I have one rule: I am the only user. No one has ever used my laptop except me. I have had family and guest ask to use it because it was on and they just wanted to look something up. NOPE! NADA, NEVER.

Get an i7 intel processor and screen size of your choice. Get at least 12mb of RAM. Don't spend extra money on features you don't need or a larger hard drive.

Hard drive size doesn't matter. Why? Take out the hard drive and replace it with a 1TB SSD. About $250. Well worth it, you will experience very fast boot ups and shut downs. Programs respond almost instantly when you click on them. Plus it is more reliable than a hard drive since it doesn't have moving parts.

The SINGLE most important thing you can spend your money on is a large SSD! It is cheaper to get about a $500 or $600 laptop and put a $250 1TB SSD in it than to buy a laptop with a 1TB already in it!

I love my Lenovo Thinkpad. Sturdy and great performance. I am a heavy user.

I spent extra for a SSD, but it certainly isn't necessary. With a Solid state drive your startup time is zero and you have no overheating issues because there is nothing spinning in your computer.

Agree on the SSD. I installed one in my Ideapad and it really boosted performance. I installed a couple in the last desktop computer build and performance is outstanding.
