Network Problem

Are they any Network experts out there?

I recently had a new server installed at my office. A Dell Server 2000 with Windows 2000 Server Software. I have 8 work stations with some older Wndows 98, 2000 and several XP Pofessional computers. It has has been working fine for several months but all of a suddenly the permissions and security have gone crazy and we keep getting access to the file denied. Even as the Admin I cannot access these folders with appraisals. I have figured a little bit of a workaround but it's like pulling teeth to get an appraisal to a client. I have a network tech but coming out I hope very soon but has anybody else who has a small office network had a similar problem? I don't think it's a virus but something really got messed up.......

This won't bring you any comfort, but WinDoze 'morphs!' I've had similar problems ..

Gonna ax the obvious question (which has a hint in it): Restored from your backups, to see if that corrects the situation?

I trust if you have always-on internet portals that your server is sufficiently (excessively) firewalled and appropriate security measures were taken with any wireless access you may/may not be using.

Windows Server 2000 is one of the most prolific systems out there, it comes with well known default settings that hackers are well aware of.

I know, you're thinking, a hacker doesn't want anything I have... probably not, except the system resources that they can use for anything from simply storing files for file sharing to launching worms/trojans.

Have you noticed excessive network activity lately?

Had a similar problem on a Novell network last summer. Make sure all users including the administrator are allocated an adequate amount of disk space on the server. We found that during installation four years ago we set disk space usage to a relatively large amount but this proved inadequate over time as we went from DOS appraisal software to Windows software.
