Hi, I've recently been thinking about reaching out to other appraisers for letters of recommendation to help when applying to banks and Federal Credit Unions. Maybe even to see if I can get on the VA. As a licensed appraiser, I was wondering if anyone has any advice to offer.

1) Get certified. 2) get a grown-up screen name or email address.

Do good work, build a solid professional reputation and develop a rapport with the reviewers. I've written a few letters for VA panel applicants over the years, but it was because I knew their work.

Recommendations require knowledge of a person's work quality. You will not get that on an open forum. "Yes, I highly recommend timelessgizmo," just doesn't meet lender requirements.

Also, many banks and lenders require a state certification these days. The VA panel is full unless you work in very remote counties and not being able to do $1,000,000+ properties is a hinderance.

I did that but still need to do more. I love my business email addresses. One for appraisal only and one for all real estate matters.

My favorite AMC/client knows me. I met one rep and he said they knew my name. I get this weird feeling. I think it's good.

Seems to me that to do so would be reasonable, seeing as how most applications for any position require peer recommendations, although I personallly would ask that the supporting comments somehow describe an arms-length distance needed to validate objectivity. OTOH it kinda reminds me of recent regs "somewhere" in the real estate sales industry that either prohibit or discourage buyers from writing a traditional, personalized letter to the seller asking for consideration of their offer. Thing is about your protocol, the purpose is to attract attebtuib to your intentions although little if anything presumably makes you better than any of the rest of us bums also hanging on by a thread because work volume is painful. But never be shy.

You can search locally with some other appraisers. I have been local so long about every agent or appraiser knows when I call them. Some agents are not happy when they hear my name.

You could start out with, hey I got this assignment request. I was wondering if you would be able to help me with it.
