New Laptop

Do you guys use your laptop as your main computer to complete appraisal reports? I have a Dell XPS 13 and I like it. But find I can work easier and more efficiently on my desktop.
I use my laptop as the office computer. I used to use a docking station but now I just plug a monitor into my laptop and use wireless keyboard and mouse. The computer is connected to the printer through the wireless network. This setup has worked best for me through the years.

black friday is a very good time to buy. especially if they have a left over. i think that staples & office max have some pretty good sales, but you need to get their weekly email ad. just keep looking, and you will find a pretty good buy. they have a very nice hp i7 8gb memory laptop for $500 for black friday. best buy will give you a good deal on left overs. i like looking at the prices.

Gotta have the SSD and i7 is sweet. I would want more RAM. I always overdo my computer builds, but they last for years. I built my desktop in 2011 with an i7 and 2 tb SSD. Still good today. Anyway check the sales. Refurbished can be good as well. Just make sure you load up on RAM and have SSD. I don't know enough to compare processors, but i7 is good. i5 is also probably sufficient and can save a few dollars. Maybe more ram (16gb) and lower processor (i5) would result in a lower price. tigerdirect.com may have refurbished deals.

Right wow they have a Dell with i7, 16gb RAM and 256gb ssd for $499 - small screen though. 14"

Try Lenovo....Thinkpad, Ideapad or workstation type laptop refurbished-

There's so many out there and even picking up an older one on ebay and upgrading components yourself is very reasonable. Youtube has tons of videos on them. So many parts out there for them.

I used laptops up until building a desktop in 2012. Always thought the laptop would be better in the event I needed to work in the field or go on vacation....but it basically sat on my desk. Didn't realize the limitations in speed until I moved to a desktop.

I'm in search of a new laptop to be used mainly in the office. No opposed to refurbished. My local computer guy is selling Dell Lattitude E6540's for $550. Specs are Windows 10 Pro, I7-4600M, 8 RAM, 500 gig SSD. Sounds a little on the high side compared to what I see on the web but he does go through them and offers a warranty. Just wondered if there are better deals out there. I don't want a desktop because this will also be used on the road from time to time. Also don't want a tablet.

Thanks for any input

Bill
Bill,

This is a pretty open-ended question. You just really need to decide what you want it to do. Do you want to have a docking station with the capability of many screens? How intensive are the apps/programs that you are running? On the commercial side, some of the software can be very RAM intensive. What are your video card requirements?

That said, my previous company used Dell laptops and they were phenomenal! My current company uses Lenovo ThinkPads and I am not a fan.

I am very particular about my computers as every second that a stupid piece of hardware holds me back is money lost. If you consider a 2-3 year life for a laptop and lose 10 minutes a day due to inferior hardware (or lack of capabilities), then justifying the extra money for something better is pretty easy.

If I had the ability to get whatever I wanted, I would buy a high-end dell with a docking station or two and a minimum of a three screen setup. Several of my colleagues run 4-8 screens. I used to run 2 screens, but find that I am more productive with three (research on one screen, excel on the other, and word on the third).

Best of luck!

If you don't travel with work then just get a desktop.

If need a laptop get a MSI or ASUS gaming laptop. 32 GB ram.
