PAREA Update: Alternative path to finding a supervisor

PAREA reminds me of what a bank CEO said when the Feds forcred the bail outs on the banks... even on those that didn't want or need the help. The comment was something like, 'They just keep thinking of new ways for us to lose money.' PAREA is the same. It will make the path to certification easier. In no way will it make better appraisers.... or even appraisers who are just as good.

Define "easier". They can make it very difficult in terms of skill sets required. But it will certainly be easier in the sense having to try and find a mentor/supervisor, work for ultra low-pay and hassle with them not signing your experience. Mentors were all over the place in terms of being desirable. Some of them will say point blank they just won't let you do any work that would count for appraisal experience - because they think it would be better for you to work with data analysis. At least they were honest. -- I've seen some pretty bright people working for MAIs for several years, and then just give up in frustration. Lot's of horrible stories.

They shouldn't make it easy to get through PAREA though. Not at all. More skill will be required in the future rather than less. ---> They really don't have any people to teach the things that matter the most. Although, they could require the equivalent college level courses in linear algebra, data mining and non-parametric statistics.
