Personally, I don't at all question your readiness to step out on your own. You should ask your (potential) clients what they require in terms of report delivery. Most will accept .pdf., some require other file extensions (.ACI, .zoo, .pds) that may require you to purchase a conversion program, and (I just found out) some will even accept a faxed copy followed up by a mailed copy.
