Effective about 3/15/02 we started requiring real names for user names for new registrants (no more "handles"). As usual this action was the result of a very few who abused the system. It's amazing what people will say when THINK they are anonymous that they wouldn't dare say when using their own real name.
So if you register and don't use your real name for your user name (as instructed on the registration form) your account will not be validated until you furnish your real name.
This doesn't affect existing users unless the current "handle" users become a problem, or unless you loose your password and have to reactivate your account, at which time you will have to change your user name to your real name. Changing user names does not affect your post count or any other feature of the board.
The long time users of this forum have always used their real names anyway, I don't see why anyone would want to hide behind a handle unless they want to hide their identity so they could say things they wouldn't normally say.
If you currently use a "handle" and would like it changed to your real name, just email me and I will do it. This is voluntary for existing users at present.
