i remember reading before the minimal size for the attic entrance...can't find it now...isn't their specific measurements which are required?

The attic must be entered, at a minimum, by head and shoulders, whether access is by pull-down stairway or scuttle. Size of the scuttle and accessibility of the attic dictate the level of entry.

This is from the IBC, which pertains to some areas of California.

SECTION R807
ATTIC ACCESS
R807.1 Attic access. Buildings with combustible ceiling or
roof construction shall have an attic access opening to attic
areas that exceed 30 square feet (2.8 m2) and have a vertical
height of 30 inches (762 mm) or more.
The rough-framed opening shall not be less than 22 inches
by 30 inches (559 mm by 762 mm) and shall be located in a
hallway or other readily accessible location. A 30-inch (762
mm) minimum unobstructed headroom in the attic space shall
be provided at some point above the access opening. See Section
M1305.1.3 for access requirements where mechanical
equipment is located in attics

That is interesting information, regarding scuttle access size. However, remember that FHA DOES NOT require a house to meet local building codes. I have never seen a minimum requirement for scuttle size. I have rarely seen one smaller than 24" wide, because most roof trusses are spaced 24" centers. But I would say as long as it is large enough to accommodate a "head & shoulders" inspection it is OK.

I agree with Icongnito.

24" on-center spacing on roof trusses, using 2" nominal (1.5" real)
truss materials gives you 24" - 1.5" = 22.5" maximum opening in that direction.

the one i entered was approxiamtely 21 x 16...smallest i have ever dealt with...it was located in the garage for a house that was built in approximately 1952...i thought i remember it had to have at least 18" on each side...thanks guys.
