Unemployment is not considering those who have given up. Statistics are showing that the actualy unemployment is hovering around 10%.

Remember, they tweaked the Unemployment rates after the 70's to hide a lot of unemployment/underemployment.

Any idea how one might confirm that? I generally find your posts to be credible, so maybe it's my memory, but I think the BLS survey question hasn't changed since my Econ days in the '60's.

I'll try and check myself,

Edit: I'm back. Like I expected, there are quite a few cooks fine tuning the soup. The current BLS methodology sure sounds like the '60's methodology to me. But, I will agree there are ample ways to cook the books plus evolving difficulties at performing surveys in this evolving cell phone/skype World.

Statistics might be slightly OFF but if you factor in that many have had to replace the good paying job with two less paying, less benefit jobs, then the unemployment rate isn't the overall issue, it's more the quality of life issue. Lets see how that factors out in todays market.

Just take the RE Professions; how many Mortgage Brokers, are making what they were two years ago???? RE Agents, Appraisers, Home inspectors, Contractors, Building Supply Reps, ETC ETC ETC Even the extremly Hot!! Hot Dog Girl on the corner has cut back her hours.

More employers are no longer paying for the cost of health and medical benefits, employees are now expected to cover those costs.

The true cost of living is all out of whack. Someone who makes $10/hr cannot be expected to pay $4+/gallon of gas, etc.
