So I've been in contact with the county health department. They are aware of the shared septic but have absolutely no information on it. So they wrote me a letter for the FHA stating that there are no complaints against the septic. That's really all they could do without having any information. I had the inspection already and he didn't say anything about the septic. But the appraiser seems nervous about it.
I would have concerns as well.
Think he/she is just trying to get as much info as possible. Individual septics are everwhere in the northeast, but shared septics aren't all that common and especially ones built in the 1930s. A modern shared septic would have state permits, easements, maintenance agreements and backup sites in the event of failure. Didn't have any of that in the 30s.
