So Hagstrom Map Company Doesn't Even Exist Anymore ?

Wow !! The Amazon Seller is trying to get $89.99 for a used Monmouth county Map from Hagstrom. I'm not going to throw out my dog-eared, broken-binding, pages falling out map --I'm putting it on Craigslist !!! Hey.....it's annotated with my notes !!

Thomas Maps seems to have something useful on sale. I'll call them on Monday.

i dont get it. GPS for the win.

Garmin GPS is just about outdated with mobile GPS on phones and tablets.

:icon_lol:

Why do you need voice recognition for a GPS, if you type on your computer, you can type an address on a GPS device. I hope I don't get to a point where I do not want to adapt to new technology, however "quaint" the old way was.

Adapt or waste time :)

Don't mean to bust your chops, I just know too many people (including myself) who have had the experience of resisting a certain change for a very long time and once they gave in, they wished they had done it sooner.

I don't like change for the sake of change, but if I do enough research and determine it will save me time, I'm all for it.

My mobile software app imports my report from my software into my tablet, which I mount to my windshield like my old Garmin, and when I open my report on it, the app opens a map of all of my comps and my subject - click on the comp I want to go to first and it sends it directly to Navigator in my tablet. I have a 7" tablet, which is bigger than most Garmin or similar GPS items. Also, with the online navigator in tablets and phones, it knows the current traffic patterns, construction, or closures - something a Garmin cannot do since it's not online.

Using technology isn't harder, it's just different. Besides, your great, great grandchildren will think you are "cool"...

:peace:

I type just fine on my computer, but I'm not good with the Thumbs on those little keyboards, and I'm not ready to Thumb-in a Subject and 6 Comp Addresses. I was riding in a Realtor's Mercedes a few years ago and that Benz had Voice Recognition. It will come to us lesser mortals soon too.

Now please excuse me.....I have to change the Ink in my Mimeograph Machine ;-)

I did not make my post to poke fun or chastise, but to explain my view of technology. It is very much a generational issue. The youngest generations see technology moving so fast that they embrace it. Seems like there is a new iPhone every month. My dad won't set up voicemail on his cell phone (and they just got a 2nd cell phone for my mom finally). I'm in my 40's, so I'm kind of in the middle. Somewhat resistant at times until I can justify a change and usually only after I see someone else using the new technology "in action" so I can see that it will be more efficient.

It's kinda like sitting on the porch in your rocking chair with your friends trying to tell us younguns how you used to walk uphill both ways - and we're trying to tell you that you still are... meanwhile we are doing significantly more work in less time and the technology pays for itself very quickly. I simply see it as efficiency = higher profitability, and nothing more. I do understand that those who hate computers and only use them because they have no choice just do not want to deal with technology.
But alas, I am a youngun, so you should be lecturing me.

It can be fun trying to embrace change, if you can believe it will be an improvement.

All that said, I do hope you find your maps!

I am very "old school" at 71 but I couldn't do my job without GPS. I do still create a map from MLS and tape it to the cover page of my work file. Sometimes the addresses don't show up on GPS or MLS maps but over-all it is such a huge time saver. Not sure how I ever got by using the old maps. Still carry a fold out county map and also have a MapVan map book in the car...rarely ever use them.

Only thing I don't like about using my GPS....it's audio blocks out what I am listening to on the radio with the turn by turn instructions. Was listening to Michael Medved's 3 hour Lincoln while doing inspections. The GPS constantly interrupted the program. Wish there was a way to turn that feature off.

First of the year...time to upgrade my maps on GPS and get a new map book from the board of REALTORS®. Happy New Year, all.

Mike, does your GPS audio come through your car speakers? If so, is the GPS system a part of your car or a plug-in unit like a Garmin or similar?

It's part of the NAV package on the Suzuki SX4 and not a plug in. I did talk to a tech at Garmin and he said it can't be changed since it goes automatically to the sound system. Same with my blue tooth on the cell phone. I do like the hands free ability but the voice dial isn't that great. Example...."call Marsha". Unit responds "did you say CALL MOTHER?"
Call Terry, ....did you say call a fairy? Geeeshhhh.

That's another thing I want my Garmin to have.....the ability to program the voice for those directions to any celebrity of my choosing !!

Some days you just feel like hearing Heather Locklear's smooth California accent, other days you're in the mood for Sigourney Weaver's Contralto. There are some days when you'd just like the entire cast of the Carol Burnett show along for the ride.

GPS for the win
As a rural appraiser I recently took a Garmin and a Tom-Tom into rural Oklahoma around Grand Lake, very populated area close to the lake, very sparse away from shore except around Grove or Ketchum. I always carry plat books or Delorme Atlas & Gazetter (they have some very detailed state maps.)

With a plat book I can get within a short distance of the subject based on Sec-Twp-Rge (which I realize isn't available E of the Miss) so I knew the basic area I was headed. Neither one could find the comps...not one single comp. In fact, one kept trying to say I would have to use a ferry...there are no ferries on Grand Lake. It was trying to take me to a CR address SOUTH of the lake when I knew it was NORTH of the lake. I found it by ignoring the GPS. I don't think Garmin even tried to find any one of them. Then I took the TomTom to the Ouachitas looking for a property and in Scott Co., AR. It could only find the cross streets...nary an address although they've had 911 addressing for some time. Finally I went to Van Buren County and same old same. It found 2 addresses out of some 5 I was looking for. Again without county plat books and Delorme Atlas & Gazetter I'd have been screwed. I even tried feeding the GPS Long/lat coordinates from the maps but they appear to be on a different scale and was taking me considerable distance from the coordinates input.

I'm pretty disgusted with GPSs right now. I will stick to the Atlas/Gazetters and plat books. The Delorme atlas (link to NJ on Amazon) is about as detailed as it gets. I bought a Rally-McNally once and it was awful. BTW, someone is looking for a sucker with a $500 plus price tag on one :rof: They are about $20 or so.
