Squeaky wood floors

lets see...one box of screws and....

A different situation but.....Im in a newer home, like 30 yrs old...and recent pre-finished hdwd in all rooms, man it squeaked with every step. Then I noticed that the hdwd floor was run in the same direction as the floor joists as opposed to perpendicular to them. I cant believe the homeowner who did it didnt take 5 minutes to google how to install a prefin hdwd floor.

I've seen a lot of furniture in the Rockies squeek from drying out....but if you find a solution, let me know. The dash on my pickup has squeeked from the day I bought it...
I was in a house today where the foundation is on a slab, but it squeeked....*&^ing mice everywhere. Nasty mess. Dead mice in the floor, under the furniture...

Our tile guy says the backer board, a whole lot of screws, and 16" tile should stop the squeak in the kitchen and other areas he's doing. As for the other 1000 SF of 1950s oak flooring, the yoyo rule is in effect since we don't want to tile it. Squeak. :leeann:

Are you sure you aren't confused on the "safe, SOUND, and sanitary" philosophy? I don't believe it referred to noise. lol

Most contractors know that the best way to eliminate squeaky floors in old or new residences is to screw the boards/slats down, not nail them.

I know there's a pun in there somewhere.
