I still prefer hotels. Easier to complain when not satisfy.
The difference is relative. I'd rather stay in the average Super 8 than the average Hilton regardless the Hilton Flag - Conrad or Doubletree. whatever. I've never stayed in a Waldorf-Astoria by Hilton. A hotel or motel is a bed, not much else to me. Some of the worst experiences I've had was supposedly great Hotels - Hilton- even in Texas- has a gun free policy so you are helpless in them while risking your firearm being stolen in the car. My car was damaged in the Renaissance in the Galleria in Houston and it had valet parking. Friends had their car broken into parked at the Peabody in Little Rock.

Now a resort is a bit different. Greenbrier Resort in W VA is nice, and Gaston's Resort is for trout fishing deluxe here on the White River. And Oklahoma is covered in Casinos, and they have a lot of premium rooms and of course, you can game, see concerts, and eat at very good restaurants.

I live in an updated home so I expect my hotel accommodations to be at par or better.
Super 8 and such are below and too old for my taste. Rather disgusting.
Most important I look for is cleanliness, no smell, and no bugs (mosquitos and bedbugs).

First night at Venice was in a old Bed & Breakfast. It was clean but hot with A/C not working and no window screens thus bugs. What's with these old buildings with no screens.
Paying $386/night, I expected more and was going to complain in social media. I felt the receptionist didn't greet me as friendly and I chose the hotel mainly for location.
However, the next day after checking out I realized I left my old addidas short in my bed and called to let them know I'll come back in a week to pick it up.

I stay in hotels whenever I can not in motels.
Out in the booners where there are no 3+ star hotels, I have no choice but to stay in motels.
Just thinking of the motel even though across from beach in Maui we stayed gave me C5 chills.

Only stayed in a Hilton once and that was paid for by the Rolling Stone production company
