Hmm. Can you point me to where it states this is illegal? I just filed my taxes with my tax accountant as a Licensed Appraisal Trainee working as an Independent Contractor and no red flags were raised.

The IRS says you cannot work as an independent contractor when you are an appraiser trainee. It has been documented many times on this forum over the years.

Interesting. Something I should let the owner of the company know then as I imagine the tax liability is on her? I wasn't given the option of working as anything other than an independent contractor.

She should know this.

Two-edged sword for you. Inform her and your situation might end the next day with no mentor(s).

Personally, I might not want to bring this up as you will be on the unemployment line.......... well not really......... as they aren't considering you an employee.

Do you happen to recall the name of any threads where this was discussed/shown/proven? I looked and couldn't find any, may not be using the right key words.

I'll be honest, this is the first time I have heard this stated, but I have only been on the forum less than two years. I would say many appraisers do not know this either. I know my supervisor did not know/think this. :)
