Tablet PC's

Read through the articles. Looks like it could have some very good benifits. Such as filling in forms out in the field. The problem that I could see is doing the sketch what Happens when you have a split or a 1.5 story house or a two story. So IMHO I still think the graph paper is better for the sketch but that may be good to convert to sitting in the car. The basic 1 story design may work well.

I think I'll end up looking at this as a possibility for the future. But then again I like new technology and think that it is cool.

This is it,
I am not buying Pocket Apex, I am not buying a PDA, I am waiting for this tablet PC. If this runs my forms software, my sketch software, hell my web browser and e mail, why I could recieve, start, finish, and deliver an appraisal all in the field !

But WHY would you WANT to?

my cappucino machine calleth me!

(Jus' kidding - I don't own one  )

I may not want to but sometimes one might have to, to meet deadlines etc. Well, for instance today, went to an inspection, public record says 4 units so I have 4 unit comps. Well one of the duplexes is now a single detached unit. I have to come home to run some 3 unit comps, but if I had this tablet with a wireless connection ????

November is when Microsoft will launch the new Windows XP Tablet addition which will have voice recognition, handwriting recognition, and extensive OCR capabilities not to mention "touch" screen input.

The tablet PC's they have now do not offer these advances in touch screen and OCR. (XP Tablet version will translate your hand written script into text for import into any software, same with voice recording)

Notice how all the "Click Notes, Pocket Total" applications are now ON SALE! lol............ Wait until December, trust me!

Hey Frederick,

OCR stands for optical character recognition. It's the technology in your scanner that 'reads' the shapes on a paper, translates the shapes into what letter it believes the shape to be, and then converts the black and white images into a digital file able to be saved as if you'd typed the document in your machine. Sounds like spiffy technology, but those I've played with so far, don't save much time. I'm sure they are improving the technology, but thus far, I think it's only so so.

By the time you proofread carefully, change the misread characters, and tweek the document to add in the formatting that the scanner can't 'read' or convert, you probably could have typed a new document.

I can see where an OCR function that recognizes handwriting would be valuable in the PDA field note application. Just hope it's better than what is in my scanner software- only about 85-90% accurate on a typewritten page, much less my handwriting.

I am not sure 'OCR' would work well under field conditions (walking and writing) I have trouble chewing gum and handling a tape!

I have had extensive experience with the 'grafiti' handheld system, and find it to be quite functional as long as you are not ont he move... a "QWERTY" keyboard is less functional for me than writing it out!

as long as I am not moving much or fast 8O

looking forward to the future (I think?!?!?!)

Looks verwwwy interesting! And expensive too!

I am musing over a new desktop PC. Something faster than this 400 I am pounding on right now.

How about 2.4 MHZ, 512 megs ram, 60 gig hard drive, CD R/W, DVD, two printer ports, 4 USB ports, and a net card for say $600? Don't need any monitors, printers, cameras, or scanners. Just a CPU.

Got any recommendations?

MIKE,
