I have run into that before in Oklahoma. If I can depend upon the ground floor dimensions, then I give a hard look at the house and estimate the roof pitch....
If it is steep, pitched from the first floor up, say 10:12 and a square house (1½ sty), the upper floor likely will contain more than 50%, BUT not a lot more. If the pitch is 5:12 or less, typically it will be less than 50%. Try to estimate the wall height and pitch, then just sketch it. You will get close if you just think about it a little.
A very complex house might be a problem.
BTW, i did some snooping a time or two where I used a range finder to estimate a building size from 100 yd away. My range finder will do 300 yd or so. As my daddy used to say, "There's more than one way to skin a cat without getting hair in your teeth."
