"Teams" Driving Me Nuts! AND Charlotte's Stupid

The appraiser instructor never had "control" of the class!

I have had situations like that in my registered appraisers class (75 hours) too. You must take the bull by the horns and "get control".

Here are the ground rules.....

1. You will sit here and listen to what I have to say, otherwise, no CE credit. End of conversation.

2. If you have questions to ask, write them down on a 3 x 5 card which I will collect at the break. I will answer them during the last hour.

3. You have an outline...which we will follow, after which, if we have time... open discussion.

4. I have been ask to present this class by your Board of REALTORS, of which I am also a member. My experience includes 34 years as a REALTOR and 22 as an appraiser. I hold the GRI, CRB, and RAA designations. I expect you to treat me as a professional and a peer...as I will you. If you become unruley, I will ask you to leave and there will be no continuing education credit.

Are we all on the same page? Good, now...lets begin.

The real estate transaction has several parts...things we all must do in order to get from the listing to the closing table......yadda, yadda, yadda.

Tell a joke at this point to lessen the shock...

Show slides or power point presentation on unusual properties...

Be prepared, have hand out materials, good visuals, a few funny stories, but most of all......MAINTAIN CONTROL!

Yeah Mike! I do the same thing when doing any type of class presentation. If you lose control, you might as well not be there. If you cannot obtain and keep control, don't teach a class. You don't have to be hard-nosed to do this. Some can, some can't. I would quit doing classes if I couldn't control them.

Charlotte, it's very sad that class happened like that. Sounds like the appraiser teaching it was trying too hard to be a nice guy. The childish behavior of the students that are supposed to be adult Real Estate professionals is a very bad reflection on all Realtors and that really makes me sad.

Charlotte,

It's sad to hear that supposed professional Realtors acted like a bunch of juvenile deliquents. Must have been a lot of "pent up" hate in that crowd! Talk about a "no-win" situation! That guy (appraiser) shoulda just asked them what they hated about appraisers.....that would've taken up the whole class time I'll bet. Maybe he could've "worked" with thier "hatred." Dunno........

Blue....even the professional Realtors I know who attended the class were totally embarrassed by the way most of the others conducted themselves. And of course, the professionals numbered about 15-20 or so out of the 75 attendees. It was just a free-for-all. Like was said earlier, maybe the instructor should have come on stronger, but this display just came out of nowhere! These Realtors know this appraiser and he's definitely one of the nicer ones around here and certainly didn't deserve that. But, from what I saw, ....nice just doesn't get it. Even the people who put on the class intervened a couple of times and that didn't help. It must have been a full moon or something and they brought their animal instincts with them! I spoke at a Managers/Broker Meeting not long ago and that was a whole different story, in that it went very well. So, I think this type of behavior is limited to, certainly, not the cream of the crop. That's the nicest way I can put it.
