Texas Licensed Residential Appraisal Exam

Hey Will41,

After my failed 1st attempt, I was NOT prepared enough to take that test. I used McKissock for my course work but I feel the practice questions were no where near what was seen on the actual test. I broke down and paid the 75 smacks to look at the practice exam questions on the Appraisal Institue. It was definitely worth the $$$$. With both Mckissock and Appraisal Institue, I passed on my second try.
Congratulations! Did you wait a month to retake it?

Hey Will41,

I took a few days off to contemplate things and get some rest, but I was back in the saddle. I did use the AI questions as a start. I also buckled down on the USPAP questions as well and if you are knowledgeable about it, then really those questions are gimmies. As soon as I passed, I had a job working in Houston. It's been a couple of weeks since I started but I'm getting back up to speed. I really do enjoy this work. There are so many more pros than cons if you do a good job and are dedicated. There really are a lot opportunities in this profession unlike my previous career in O & G. Wish you all the best of luck!!!

How much did you use your HP calculator (which I hate by the way).
I was unimpressed by the 12C until I used it awhile. I can't use any other kind now. Keep using it. It becomes intuitive. The CR test I took was not deep into the income weeds but a few things were there. Also, there were definitions from architecture you might review. I recall a question that showed up about pilasters and another about stair way and rafter parts names - Purlins, baluster, etc. If you can find it, there is a Henry Harrison book (ridiculously priced on Amazon) called

1001 Questions & Answers To Help You Pass Any License or Certification Appraisal Exam

But you can still buy the book which used to be sold by his company "Forms & Worms" but goes by another name. It's worth the price

So I know this is an old thread and that I am reviving it by asking this question. I just wanted to confirm with everyone as I am going to be taking the Certified Exam on Tuesday 02/02/2021, the HP12C is not allowed during the test?

It is allowed in California - I cannot imagine any state not allowing it during the exam because then NO ONE WOULD PASS THE TEST.

That's what I figured. I got worried reading through some of the comments thinking that I wasn't going to be able to use it....trying to do all of that math by hand would be no bueno. Thank you.

Every day and I even have an app for the 12 C on my phone. RPN is so much faster and better and arithmetic calculators it isn't even funny. That's why they have been making the 12C for 40 years (introduced in 1981.)
Once you master the 12C the six functions of a dollar becomes a snap.

Unless, of course, you have no brain for math and you only needed it to pass the test ... and never again .... thank the Lord ... :ROFLMAO:

Actually I was an "early adopter" of Reverse Polish Notation. RPN was used on the Olivetti 101 - a 40 lb. programmable calculator from the early 1970s and HP 10C engineering calculator (I wish they'd bring it back.) A Used 15c or 10c is over $200 used. The 10c was the companion of the 12C and this horizontal configuration is one of the best features of it.
