Those disto things

I find i use a fat max more, which is also built by Leica but it doesn't have the range of Disto, I have both and like them. To really get an accurate reading a small tripod doesn't hurt.

Can't live without my Disto

BUY ONE!!

I have had my Disto for several years now. I cannot believe that more appraisers don't have it. Truth be told I cannot imagine life without it. It would be like going back from digital cameras to 35MM for our appraisals-remember those days? Oh and those cute little scratch on's for the maps (ugh)?

Anyhow-there is a learning curve. Admittedly, I did carry both until I got used to it. Now I will take on any house! Buy one! It is a priceless tool. Aside from hitting gutters, fences and other houses I have found lots of shortcuts and tricks to using it (tip: if you know the width of an exterior wall, take lots of interior measurements---especially on a second floor). + and - feature works great too! The sight really helps on long distance shots or in bright sun light. The triangulate thing is overrated and finicky.

They are VERY efficient with batteries, might last a year or more on a few AA's. The ONLY bad thing is watch how many times (and how far) you drop it. I drop things-a lot, so it developed a loose contact to the batteries which I just pryed up and fixed. Oh and you might have to warm up the batteries in your coat or hand if you leave it in the car during the winte-no different than the camera. Once they are warm it will work. Course this only happens when it is REALLY cold, like in the teen's or single digits.

But, long gone are the days of traversing boulders, hornets nests, mud puddles of unknown depth, icicles, rose bushes and unruly shrubs :) Fair warning though, homeowners and children will ask lots of questions "what is THAT"? Oh and there is the potential that their cat will climb the wall after the 'red dot'.

Had a kid a few weeks that would not leave me alone to get the work done. Kept getting in the way. I told him if he got in front of the beam it would burn a hole clear through him. He took off yelling. Never seen him again.

As for "CATs", I like to start them on the carpet for traction and the across the title floor and put the beam under the ice box. Piles that silly cat up every time. You would think it would learn after four years.

Wm: I do not have a disto but I once stayed at a Motel 6! Hey, disto is $400+. For starters, go to Home Depot or Lowes and get a Stanley "FatMax". Cost: $99 + tax. Measures to the 1/100th of an inch up to 100ft. I have probably done 50 homes since buying it and it has not failed me. The first several houses I did with it I actually follow with the tape to check its accuracy. I like to do interior walls with my sketches because I have nothing else to do and the FatMax cut my on-site time in half. Give it a try.

Thanks to all who replied. I googled Matt Johnson and found his web site.

Ray ... kids or cats ... just hit them in the eye with it for a few seconds and soon they will be so confused by not being able to see out of it that they will go away somewhere to cry so you can't see them. It works every time and someday in the future when the sight returns and is in perfect focus, you can send them a bill for the laser surgery. It saves you time and makes you money with future residuals... what else could you possible want? :)

January 1, 2006 I bought my FatMax and have found it to be very useful. However, I still bring my tape with on the inspection. The laser makes quick work on interior measurements and I use it on some exterior measurements that are blocked by bushes, kennel or fencing. I still use the tape on the easily measured exterior dimensions. Sometimes the red dot is hard to see and I just run the tape. You do have to keep it steady to hit a small target like a downspout.

One great thing about the Disto I have is that it has a built-in scope. Makes seeing the little red dot a whole lot easier. Does FatMaX have a scope?

The FaxMax has has no scope. The visability issue is only a problem if the target is in the bright sun. Depending on the house, I may not need the sunny dimension for my sketch.

I'm a trainee in Madison, WI looking for some information on a Disto (A2 vs. A3) and where to get one and who to get it from??? Does Matt Johnson have a website??
