Quick bio... I spent 35 years in industrial corporate marketing. I left about 5 years ago for an early retirement. Now I want to return to work, new industry no travel. I thought of a residential appraiser. Which brings me to a few questions. How do you go about getting 2,000 hours with a qualified mentor and would someone mentor an individual re-entering the work force?
Full transparency please.

Thank you.

What made you interested in becoming a residential appraiser? RSDS APPRAISAL DIVERSITY is hiring an appraiser trainee in Florida. They have more than one office.

Sheila,
You've got experience in marketing! I'd suggest going to a local appraiser chapter meeting (Appraisal Institute, ASA, etc.). and talk to some appraisers in your area. You might find someone who is interested in 'sponsoring' you. At this point in time the residential field is at its ebb. Good luck.

I would look up the Appraisal Institutes PAREA program. You will need 150 hours of education before they will consider your acceptance into the program. They are advertising at capacity but I heard they are adding another mentor.

i would run away from this, as far as you can. run rabbit run. there will also be no mentor after you have spent money and time on classes. having been in this business forever, there is no hope for it's future making a living.

Thank you for all feedback. I'm open to more.

I'm seriously thinking about this for several reasons. I need another 10 years of work as things have changed. Two of my friends in Chicago have been appraisals for 20 years or so and they love it. The thought of staying local vs travel, is appealing and.the autonomy is where I do my best work.are up. My backgroumd as a finance major had me working with numbers daily which I do enjoy.. I've moved to central Fl from Chicago and have no contacts and could use a good support system. This is why I reached out to the forum.

I had to look the bold above and here is what I found'

There is so much right and wrong about the above in bold. All of us regulars collectively could come up with a good list of the pros & cons.

You could probably get a job with like a local real estate management company that rents houses and condos and make more money and very minimal personal risk involved. A company that sells time shares for like vacationers, or just rents local condos or houses to vacationers.
