"Total has stopped working" Since updating to Windows 11, total keeps crashing randomly. Even after a reinstall. (Resolved by Updating)

The problem may well be Windows itself. My computer updated 10 and it crashed. I had a choice I could reload Windows and lose every program, every password, everything and spend the next week reloading it all - or, simply for get the USB 3.0 and add a 4 way USB splitter in back... which I did. My next computer will NOT be a Windows computer and luckily I don't have any work program that requires it.
I tried, some years ago - probably at the rollout for 10 - to dive into the issues that I have. I asked a tech support person there: What about IOS. Unbuto (not spelled right), or anything. Have you tried anything that works correctly and consistently? They advised me to stick with Windows. So, sweet Lord. If you have a trick up your sleeve about the hardware please share it. You know, they recommended a Samsung tablet for mobile appraising. I bought what they suggested. And . . . it has the same level and amount of problems that my Lenovo tablet had.

Finally, after several Total updates and updating to the latest Windows 11 Pro version 22H2 my Alamode installation is stable and I can get through a whole report (actually an entire workday) without seeing it crash. Not sure who fixed what during those updates however Total is running considerably faster now.

For form reports yes. But I use WordPerfect which will run on Linux. And most Linux computers come with Firefox. Anything you can run thru them should work. And a few programs like Adobe Acrobat, word, etc. have open source clones - and Thunderbird can replace Outlook. It can be done. Just no one with appraisal software. You can run a virtual machine in windows.

It crashes ~20 minutes. Sometimes more frequently. I have no idea why. It restarts quickly, but it's still a waste of time. Has anyone fixed a similar problem?

I keep telling people to avoid Windows 11 until mid-summer. Yes, some do have it working. I would say on mostly newer Intel based systems that are not heavily loaded with all kinds of software. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if I extend that wait longer. My main problem is my Synology DS1821+, DSM 7.x is having problems with Windows 11.

I have lost respect for Microsoft over the past 8 years. Aside from all the major probems they have had with Azure over the past years, they are getting very pushy in terms of wanting to lock you into their cloud based systems and software. Too pushy. You are lucky you have Windows 10. There are LOT of drivers for a LOT of devices - that still need updating for Windows 11. -- If you need more speed right now, get a faster system, - in which case of course WIndows 11 is more likely to work on it without problems.

-- But they keep coming out with better hardware. Apple is about to announce M2.

Now the thing about Apple Silicon (M1 & M2) is that is runs cooler than an Intel or Ryzen based PC. - And it is small. There is no real competition for a package as small as a Apple Mac Studio. That means your Apple will easily go 10+ years of hard constant use and still be as good as new. Low wattage == Low Heat == Long Life. An M1 Max however, is not really any faster than a Ryzen 5950 or the new Intel I9-12900K, but the latter two will run a lot hotter and require a larget desktop chassis. You should be able to run most Windows based software on Apple with Parallels.

Of course, the other thing is that you cannot upgrade an Apple Mac Studio. You are going to be stuck with whatever you get. The longer you can wait to buy, probably the better. 1T or even 2T doesn't last me that long any more. Rather surprising. In addition SSD on Apple is way more expensive than SSD on non-Intel systems. You cannot upgrade SSD on an Apple Mac Studio any way at all. You can stick in an external drive of course.

Windows 11 is perfect now. Either a windows or A la mode update fixed the problem a couple of months ago. I would never use apple because their hardware is overpriced and I can build exactly what I want myself. Windows is easiest because I play video games occasionally, but I would use Linux over MacOS.

Edit: I do hate the way everyone pushes cloud integration, but it's not a huge deal to me. I use google and have conceded to giving them all my data. Goog workspace with drive computer backup is the best setup.

Windows 11 may be perfect for you and many others. In fact it run fine on my wife’s 1 year old Intel Nuc. But for many others it will still have strange problems if they plug in the wrong peripheral - in fact problems that cause a reinstall of Windows.

Mini computers are nice because they are small ennough to take with you, and yet powerful. I have gone through 6 Intel Nucs - they all started overheating after several years and finally died. I have a 11 year old Mac Mini and Apple laptop that still work fine. Especially the low wattage Mac Mini. You can stick an Apple Max Studio in your suitcase or backpack - but not a monster desktop. Apple makes thin keyboards that don’t take up much space and as for a monitor - put it in a special case or use the motel room TV.

But yes - the Apple is really for the more wealthy or in any case Apple diehards.
