Trainee Experience Hours

But I am just still confused about what hours would be counted as valid experience hours
Welcome to appraising!

here are some newbie questions: Should I buy E&O insurance since I am working for my mentor as a individual contractor now?
I would discuss this with your supervisor/mentor, but one way or another I would recommend getting some kind of E&O

How can I sign the certification if the AMC/Lenders don't allow trainee to do the appraisals? what did you do when you were a trainee? I know I am new.
You might not be able to sign (I wasn't able to for most clients when I was a trainee from '06-'08) but you should be able to receive experience hrs if you/your mentor can state somewhere in the report (generally the addendum) that you gave significant assistance to (then state what you helped on in the report; it may have been the whole process or maybe just research, etc)

Good luck

In Illinois, an AMC can not prevent a trainee from performing an appraisal. I was a trainee from 2012-2015, and was able to sign reports from the beginning. We don't work for AMCs, so that part was significantly easier than many stories I've heard from other trainees.

Work experience is clearly spelled out here:

Look carefully at Category 10, you may be able to claim 400 hours of prior work that did not spell your contribution via words included in the report. Write up an analysis summary, document your hours spent on that assignment, and have supervisor sign it. If the supervisor appraiser declines to sign it, this may be a clue that your progress is being impeded, which may be for competitive reason. Also, education with Case Studies may apply - 15 hours in Advanced Residential Appraisal & Case Studies and General Report Writing & Case Studies for 30 hours. Best to call the appraiser licensing office in Sacramento for these two methods of accumulating hours, they are friendly and have an investment in your career progression as you will pay more in annual fees.

Hi, everyone
I am from California. I am a trainee appraiser and have been working for a certified appraiser for a long time. I am kind of confused how to gain the experience hours. Since most lenders/AMC don't allow trainee to do the appraisals, I have no idea what kind of appraisal I can do and the hours can be counted. Do I need to sign up any AMC?
My supervisor appraiser just told me that it is hard to gain hours now and have to find some lenders that allow trainee to do the appraisal.
Any suggestions? How do I suppose to gain valid hours?
Thank you.
Jim, if you want to share my experience to upgrade your trainee license, responds me. I recently earned ALso I could advise you of my case.

Thanks for reply.
Yes, they allow 400 hours that necessary to state in the report. My mentor told me most AMCs/Lenders don't want trainee do the appraisal, so I am concern how to gain the rest 1600 hours. I will consider the case study, thanks for letting me know.
